Or perhaps SHOT GUN in addition. Hell yeah! Colorado has a "Make My Day" law (yes, that's really what it is called, from the Dirty Harry movie). Since the flag was on his porch, he could have argued that they were trying to start his home on fire and thus endangering him and/or his family. No jury in Greely (a ranching/farming community with a medium-sized university) would convict him.
