The statement that bugs me the most:

Director Mike Lee of Maine - suggested that members should "have trust and confidence in the staff."

Here we have a Director, a representative of the interests of the members, calling on the members to be passive and trusting. In any represenative form of governance, it is essential that the members be aware of the actions of the executive and actively support or oppose the actions of that goverment. Having "trust and confidence in the staff" in this context amounts to letting the elite control things, since they must know best anyways.
