[T]he typical conservative was a grumpy ultra-serious type.E.g., Goldwater. Especially in his senile, yammering, pro-gay activist days.
So Reagan comes on the scene and he is laughing AT their foibles....and they really hated that.
Reagan did have a fine sense of humor. A wonderful and charming man who is routinely condemned by the fun-loving, wisecracking, loosey-goosey libertarians here as a "socialist."
A lot of the old line conservatives don't even realize how clueless they are. Many of them probably condemned Sam Kinison for foul language without actually LISTENING to what he said.
I listened to Kinison. I only thought he was funny when I still had liberal leanings. Then I discovered he was an unfunny, obscene, screaming ass.
Unfortunately, Peter Pan, that's the perspective that one tends to acquire when one grows up.

A passionate Jeffersonian Constitutionalist who has been associated with Libertarianism's ideals since picking up Ayn Rand at the age of fifteen -- and who scores 100% on any and every Libertarian Quiz -- I wouldn't touch the modern party with a hundred foot pole! A lot of those Randians are/were pretty clueless too. They used to call themselves Objectivists and they had little sense of humor. Ever date an Objectivist chick? Talk about a lousy evening! Yeah, I want to sit there and discuss Randian philosophy all night. < /sarcasm>
Hey, I agree with a lot (but not all) of what Ayn Rand has written but those Objectivists can be really overbearing. Fortunately, there aren't too many of the cult-like Objectivists left.
To: Brian Allen
Its members seem more like libertines than Libertarians! Must agreeee with you to some extent. Here in Austin, 50% of my libertarian friends are participating in the AntiWar parades with the maggot infested, unwashed Socialists. I just don't understand. It's rather split the party, IMO.

I have noticed more and more posters standing up for Abortion, Homosexuality, the Porn Industry and Drugs since I first came to this site back before the 2000 Election. You got that right. It started by the pro-druggies characterizing anybody that opposed the legalization of drugs as being statist Nazi's who only cared about infringing on other's "freedom."
Jim Robinson is anti-war on drugs which means those threads are allowed to infect the forum.
What he doesn't realize is pro-legalization are either leftists trying to push their agenda under the conservative buzzwords "freedom" and "the right of the people"...or those who have been duped by leftists into thinking that.
Once the camels nose was under the tent, it became an easy thing for a leftist to come on here, post something outrageous, wait for someone to respond with an insult, and then get them banned by hitting the abuse button.
Libertarian DOES NOT equal conservative.
To: Luis Gonzalez
yep they had you banned and buried only they spelled your screen name wrong LOL
The ones that said it are fools... and freeper wanna=be but they are stuck in a cave like Bin Laden.

Amazing how many people would be surprised at the number of wealthy successful conservative attorneys, physicians, and business owners who were leftist junkies in college.

I listened to Kinison. I only thought he was funny when I still had liberal leanings. Then I discovered he was an unfunny, obscene, screaming ass. I still listen to Kinison's routines and I still find them hilarious. Obscene, perhaps but soooo true. I remember one routine he did about when he was unhappily married and his wife was yakking away next to him in the car at a red light and all he wanted to do was just open the door and leave his wife with the keys still in the car. You have to hear that one to appreciate it but it sure rang true as did a lot of his other routines.
Andrew Dice Clay, OTOH, just did a lot of foul language without any real point. Also he was a lame Sam Kinison ripoff.

"What he doesn't realize is pro-legalization are either leftists trying to push their agenda under the conservative buzzwords "freedom" and "the right of the people"...or those who have been duped by leftists into thinking that."
Your lack of insight is astounding.
To: DouglasKC
Libertarian DOES NOT equal conservative.i.e., you're not too bright when it comes to judging others. I guess your definition of conservative has been self defined as the baseline for "conservative." We're a group that ranges from the far right on a scale to the middle of the road or in my opinion we cover the range of all people who do not espouse the LIBERAL/Leftist agenda = not easy to define.

Most of them were classical liberals with a strong and uncompromising faith in the Christian God. Today you'd call them paleo-conservatives and christian fundamentalists. They were champions of property rights, anti-taxation, anti-democracy, political speech rights, isolationism while at the same time passed hundreds of state laws that punished immorality and social depravity. Or if you prefer they were largely landed middle class Burkean-style conservatives. Paleo-conservative and fundamentalist protestant in today's relative terms or paleo-fundies.

To: jwalsh07
I don't know what Paleo-fundies are either, but they certainly don't sound good. One thing I know is that the founding fathers were anything but, thank heavens. Franklin, Jefferson, Washington and Adams would absolutely freak at being so described, particularly the first two. These kind of threads are a total waste of energy. Little of value is said, typically. JMO.

Amazing how many people would be surprised at the number of wealthy successful conservative attorneys, physicians, and business owners who were leftist junkies in college. Bet there's a large group.... including David Horowitz and P.J. O'Roarke.
