Leonid Report from Western Connecticut: Pretty Impressive
Posted on 11/18/2001 12:51:41 AM PST by dep
Thought this would be a good place to start a string on reports of the Leonid metwor shower, which is cooking right along and will be for the next hour or so. Here is western Connecticut, we're seeing, with two people watching, about 15-20 per minute. All locations in the sky, and headed in all directions, though the best ones seem to be from about Polaris heading northwest.
Not a bad show God has given is this Sunday morning, though His scheduling could be a little better. I guess he wanted to catch the people who would otherwise be at the Harry Potter movie.

Was looking forward to this. Then the fog moved in and can't even see the road from the front door, let alone the meteor shower. Would have been great to see.

Amazing in southern RI...God is quite the artist...also about 20 per minute. Mostly in the south.

Can someone tell me why they're coming in at different directions?
It seems to me that, since we're going in one direction, and the meteorites are going in one direction...
Sorry, I'm a history major.

be ye not troubled -- in my experience, it seems as if the hugest meteor shower in the history of the world is announced about once a year. usually corresponding with clouds. this is the first one here in a clear night in ages.

yeah -- think of it not as looking out into the rain but looking up into the rain. if you do, you'll note that the drops move around in relation to each other, bang into each other, all sorts of inter-relations. we're seeing the equivalent of the ground's view of rain.

though one of the true mysteries is why typos to not appear until after the "post" button is pressed.

Here in Norwalk, my sons and I counted 103 in a little less than a half hour. Nice and clear tonight, a little nip in the air. I just glanced outside again a second ago and saw six in about 30 seconds.

Just north of Burlington, VT...getting about 5-7 per minute...right now 5:00 a.m.....mostly heading north but a few contrarians going west.
Some are big enough to be leaving trails for a second or two.
The sky here is partly cloudy but open enough for a pretty good view.

We saw one at around 4:20 that left a trail that lasted a good 45 seconds. Impressive.

We're not getting the numbers that everyone else seems to be getting, but it is impressive nonetheless. Semi-clear sky here in Sarasota, I saw ten in about twenty minutes.

Thanks!
This is very cool. Some of the big ones leave trails. I'm glad I woke up for this!

Saw Harry Potter.
Meteorites here 1/2 hour south of Ithaca, 15-20 per minute.
More visible to the South, but ranged across the sky. One gave us the illusion of hitting the ground to the Southwest.

We saw one at around 4:20 that left a trail that lasted a good 45 seconds. Impressive. I saw that one too -- while I was walking past my bedroom window. It lit up my room. Amazing.
I was going to bed at about that time after having been out for most of the wee hours, but when I saw that, I put my coat on again...
SE Mass, quite a show.

Here in Brooklyn, NY city saw 38 in a period of 45 minutes. between the houses blocking the view and the light pollution not bad. Saw two spectacular ones that left a green trail and vapor trail besides that lasted over 10 seconds, a great show considering.

It's quite a show in S. Carolina. Crystal clear skies and sometimes 3 side by side. Best ever...

It is 5:25 AM EST in Swan Quarter, North Carolina (on Pamlico Sound in north to central North Carolina). My family and I just got back in after about 45 minutes of watching a wonderful light show. It was great.
