An American Airlines A-300 reported mechanical trouble while waiting to take off Monday morning, about an hour before it crashed just outside News York's JFK Airport.
AA Flight 587 was scheduled to take off at 8:00 a.m. but was held on the ground for an hour and fifteen minutes to repair an unidentified mechanical problem, a travel agent familiar with the flight told WABC Radio.
Additionally, a United Airlines pilot says he over-heard a radio report from Flight 587's pilot saying he was experiencing engine trouble before the plane exploded in mid-air over New York's Jamaica Bay.
The Bush administration has announced the FBI believes that Flight 587 did explode in mid-air and is working to determine the cause.

Posts like this tick me off every time I read one. The problem is, I don't get to the "move on, nothing here, spend money" until I'm finished reading the post.
Cripes, be a little more creative, or productive?

Well said, j. Let's not start going overboard right off the bat, folks.

they are wise not to put out information until they are sure it is accurate and pertinant This is true. I only wonder why be so insistent that no communication occurred.

"will be interesting to see what an investigation brings out. " No need to wait, let's look it up in the media "Guide for Reporting; Aircraft Crash"
Pg. 23:
"Engine, falling off thereof:
A. Last worked on by non-union employee- report "mechanical failure"
B. Last worked on by union employee- report "mysterious cause- possible missile impact"

So people who die in accidents or who are murdered just didn't pray hard enough? No, just agreeing with you. Federal employees or not, all human and mechanical systems are unreliable. Experience has taught me, often quite graphically, that Trust is something best reserved for God.
Ever had a gassed-up chain saw about to cut you in half...and it didn't start...or a 20ga., cocked automatic shotgun pointed under your chin, trigger pulled...and it said "click?". I have. No fun, but hard to ignore the lesson. We are not in mortal hands, no matter how it happens to look.

No kidding. If I read one more "move on, nothing to see here" post I am going to scream. It's so vapid. Those who post them obviously have nothing interesting say.

documented facts speak for themselves Contrary to your implied anthropomorphism, data requires an interpretation.
In REAL LIFE engineering, there is always a trade-off between reliability, price, weight, functionality, etc etc.
People who suffer the delusion that engineering of any system can be made perfectly safe if only we could overcome the conspiracies afoot, are simply ignorant of the tradeoffs in real life engineering.
It's safer to fly an airplane mile than to drive a car mile. As long as that remains true, then the cheaper and more attractive one can make airline flight versus ground transportation, a NET number of lives will be saved.
Those are the FACTS.

How soon
we apologists forget.
"Don't worry, keep spending!"...Is pretty much what we heard from the administration within hours of the first anthrax incident.

I wonder if they can account for all the maintenance workers.

What you forget in the car accident statistics is that it's drunk drivers, drugged drivers, the elderly, and teenaged drivers who have the most accidents. The statistics aren't the same across the board.

"Why does Ari and government insist there has been no "unusual communication" between pilot and tower?"Oh,,,that's because the BUSINESS of big government is to protect big BUSINESS.
Simple stuff....

I wonder if they can account for all the maintenance workers. Good point. Who's to say that a sleeper wasn't one of the maintenance workers. This would be bad, seeing as how security measures have supposedly be stepped up and all personnel have gone through screening since 9/11. Or, at least that's what we've been told.

Why does Ari and government insist there has been no "unusual communication" between pilot and tower? He didn't "insist" on it.

I've had flights delayed for an hour or more for mechanical problems which have included replacing a burned out light bulb on a consol, replacing a broken seat, checking out a malfunction which ended up being a short in the circuit for the warning light (all as identified by the flight crew upon questioning). A mechanical problem could be something very innocuous...or could be an engin issue. Time (hopefully) will tell. My gut tells me its an accident, not terrorism, but that is not based on any evidence whatsoever. I may be worng, but I pray I'm right.

I wonder if something was rigged to delay the flight, something very fixable and that it was during this delay to fix a superficial problem that something evil was planted on the plane. Who knows. But I know I would be screening every mechanic and ground worker who had access to the plane.

Wonder how you tell the difference between sabotage and say, counterfeit and/or Chinese-made cheapie airplane parts giving out?

He didn't insist on it. Ari Fleischer said there were no "unusual communications" from the cockpit. Ari said this about three times. To me, that's pretty insistent.
