• Crash took place in the Rockaways section of the borough of Queens, a residential area about 5 miles southwest of Kennedy Airport.
• Fighter jets were seen flying over the area.
• F.A.A. spokesman says there is no indication of what caused the crash.
• All inbound bridges and tunnels in New York City closed except to emergency vehicles.
• All New York area airports closed.
• Families of passengers only can call American Airlines at (800) 245-0999.
