Have you ever been asked by a sweet-sounding woman, to whom you have just been introduced, "Are you a 'Christian'?" or the same question, in a very quiet voice, by a cold-eyed man?

There is a certain type of generic pentecostal or evangelical (intentionally lowercase) movement which has appropriated the word Christian as a label for those who believe their particular brand of self-absorbed Christian faith. Frequently, but not always, they form churches, but don't affiliate with traditional mainline Protestant denominations.

I think that's what she means - Methodists are Christians, but not Christians.

Incidentally, I think these are also the people the Left derides as the "Religious Right."

You mean non-denominational Christians. Which is actually a denomination.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllllllll, I won't go with that, sorry. Your reply, although intended to explain the previous poster's reply, certainly attempts to paint "non-denominational Christians" (yes, I just happen to be one, thank you very much) in quite a harsh light. You know it, I know it. They / we aren't freaky-eyed, glassy-stared automotons ready to rain Hell-fire and brimstone upon your sinning skull, fercryinoutloud.

The images some people carry around here never cease to amaze me.

Well, that's a stretch. I am a Lutheran and have answered to Christian all of my life. I am a Christian, but not a Christian? I don thin sooooo.

And as for the non-denominational people....gosh, I know many and the reason they are non-denominational is because American families have done a lot of blending and some of the people I know feel that the non-denominational choice is LESS stringent and dramatic then Catholic, Lutheran, or whatever. People I know who are non-denominational or no more right-wing then I am. So, unless I completely misunderstand your post, I don't agree at all.
