I've read the vaccinations previously given are no longer good because of time. How many years is a vaccination good for?

I read somewhere that the vaccination is only good for about 10 yrs. Now don't quote me on this as I don't remember where I read it, and if it was a reliable source.

While in the military, I was supposed to get mine renewed every 10 years. Last time I asked, they said "sorry, it doesn't exist anymore, so we don't vaccinate for it anymore." That was about 1983 or so, I think. Can't find my old shot record right now...
