WFP appoints George McGovern as Global Ambassador on hunger

19 October – United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Catherine Bertini today named former United States Senator George McGovern as the agency's first Global Ambassador on Hunger.

In his new role, Mr. McGovern will act as the agency's worldwide advocate on hunger issues and promote programmes focused on poor children and mothers as ways to eradicate hunger and poverty.

"We are honoured that Ambassador McGovern has agreed to continue his fight against hunger, through a renewed affiliation with WFP," said Ms. Bertini. "As a WFP founder and a long-time supporter, he is ideally placed to help ensure that hunger remains at the top of the humanitarian agenda."

A child of the Great Depression and a decorated veteran of the Second World War, and a witness to widespread hunger and poverty in war-torn Europe, Mr. McGovern has devoted his life to furthering the cause of the hungry poor in the United States and around the world.

As the first director of the US Food for Peace Program appointed by President John F. Kennedy in the 1961, he was instrumental in founding WFP. Forty years later, the agency has become the largest humanitarian aid agency in the world. It provides life-saving food aid to millions every year in emergency and development projects.

Among his many other accomplishments, Mr. McGovern is the author of a book on how to fight global hunger. Published last spring, the book, titled Ending World Hunger in Our Time, lays out a strategy to end world hunger by focusing on programmes that feed and educate poor children.

"I can't think of anyone better than George McGovern to serve as our first ambassador," Ms. Bertini said. "And at a time like this, when it is more important than ever we find long term ways to solve world hunger, I am proud he will be at our side."

United States Senator George McGovern as the agency's first Global Ambassador on Hunger.

I thought Kate Moss was a lock.

I can already forecast McGovern's three-step, hunger-fighting action plan for immediate UN implementation: :
1. Buy South Dakota corn.
2. Buy South Dakota wheat.

3. Fill in all remaining nutritional gaps with tasty Deli sandwiches, snow cones, and refreshing soft drinks served in collector cups from Wall Drug.

You beat me. I always thought that McGovern looked like a guy who subsisted on a Kraft single between two pieces of Wonder bread followed by a generic vanilla pudding in the six pack of plastic cups: washed down with a glass of tap water.

For some reason, this thread has me wondering if it's too late for a Pizza Hut delivery.

The whole concept of "hungry" in 2001 America is a really cruel joke. We are the only society in World History where the "poorer" you are, the fatter you are.

McGovern wasn't named by Bush, he was named by another worthless UN Agency. And, if he's been getting results for all these years, why is he still needed?

McGovern should stand up before the General Assembly and castigate those nations whose governments steal food from their citizens and allow their people to starve for political advantage. What do you think the odds of that are?

He was returned to that job by GWB because he gets results. McGovern is a talented and deeply compassionate man and would have made a great president.

Where is the "/sarcasm" ...?

Easy, easy. Claws in. No need to attack a woman like Ann Coulter, who has displayed great courage and taken on truly evil and sick forces and stood as the lonely voice of truth on many occasion.

Weren't you the person, gcruse, who had their posts deleted by the moderator 2 days ago for calling men "pricks?" If I am mistaken, let me know.

Read the rules. If you cannot follow them--go away.

Which aging leftist will be named "Global Ambassador on Homsexuality and Bestiality"?

So many leftist-created victim groups to pander to, so few aging leftist icons to serve them.
