An unpopular statement might be that your mama wears army boots. A statement that this yahoo will slit your mama's throat if given half the chance, is a little stronger than mere "unpopularity." It really doesn't much matter what the 1rst amendment says or means -- people will take this as a real threat, and some will act accordingly. There is a notion of "fighting words." This guy took a risk. That's the long and short of it.

I didn't say to ignore the guy, in fact I have a number of ideas how to treat him, and most of them would get me banned. I just tried to caution the poster I replied to against generalizing from this guy to other fifth generation American muslims. My head of sales is a third (?) generation American with Turkish ancestors and thus a muslim, and his son is an officer in the Navy.
