Forgiveness of sins requires a personal encounter, indicated papal spokesperson Archbishop John P. Foley.

“The Internet offers an opportunity for dialogue, for response to questions, for interactive instruction and even for pastoral counseling,” Foley, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, said June 5. “It does not offer the opportunity for online confession.”

Online mass is another matter, however. The church is still discerning its stance on virtual Sunday service attendance, which is obligatory in Roman Catholic tradition

More wishful thinking from the secular media. Sacraments require being personally there. You can't "phone it in." How is one to partake of the Communion while watching TV? Have it sent via FedEx?
