In fact Jesus taught that fasting was a free choice thing and should be done with no show, quietly, secertly so as not to draw attention to the act.

Yes, but Jesus knew their sin was the love of food, and had to say this to him to show them their sin. It isn't really meant to apply to modern Christians.

We should always pause before assuming that something "doesn't apply" to modern anything.

Uhhh... I disagree. Matt.6:16-18 Jesus knew they were fasting to get attention and rewards from people. He did not say fasting was right or wrong, just that it should be done for no EARTHLY gain.

Unless you are looking at a different scripture this is what I was referring to?
