Good piece - one quibble.

What is it about a religion that proscribes mutilation of a woman's genitals and the stoning of a woman suspected of adultery that bothers squeamish people like me?

Proscribe means condemn. I assume Gary's not squeamish about supporting religions that proscribe these things. A victim of Clintonism should be especially aware that proper use of words matters.

Gary clearly meant "prescribes" rather than "proscribes" an error, certainly, but a common one which people should be able to correct in their heads based on the context of the sentence. Hardly a big deal, and not at all comparable to eight years of relentless lying on the part of the clintonistas.

My guess would be that proscribe is a typo.

Prescribe: To set down rule or guide; enjoin.
