I, too, would like to see some sort of sunset limit on the new agency, but I don't know whether such a limit would defeat the purpose of the agency. But I shudder to think what a socialist Congress, AG, and SCOTUS could do with this idea.

I did a search on "Home Defense" on Google. There are a lot of references. It seems that this is an idea that's been kicked around since at least 1997. The agency was even introduced as a bill to Congress at least once.

Here's a website devoted to the proposition: http://www.homelandsecurity.org/journal/index.cfm

Thanks (re post 107)

Seeing Frank Keating's name in their lineup is really scary. If I remember right, Gov Frank was the finder of the rear axle with VIN according to the second version from OKC.

"Anti Terrorism Bill" failed; we lost the Murrah Building; Anti Terrorism Bill passed.

Homeland Security failed; we lost the World Trade Center twin towers; ...

If every time there's a crisis the reaction is to clamp down on rights, I'd guess we're 5 crises away from totalitarianism.

Instead of singing Kumbaya (sp) because Bush gave a great speech, we should remember what our mission is (or should be). We've got to look beyond ourselves to what we're passing on to our decendents.
