"It is very important," Vice President Dick Cheney lifted a finger for emphasis on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday, "that we do not convey an impression as if we had declared war on Islam."

He was just one in a long line of men and women who warn us about blaming Arabs or Muslims. The other night, Tom Brokaw's voice reached fever pitch as he called those engaged in finger-pointing "bigots, bigots, bigots."

I have genuine affection for my President but he was a lot brighter before he was inaugurated. On the other hand, Dick Cheney seems like he could kill you in chess. I could start a fan club. (Lest there be any question, I'm a lady.)

Here then is a question Americans are entitled to have answered. When Arabs and other Muslims arrive and settle in America, when and how does the miraculous transformation occur whereby the Christianity -- or Judaism -- that surrounds them ceases to offend?

Indeed!

Arabs should not have to pass a litmus test to have their right protected.

I think you mean Muslims and of course they should pass a litmus test, particularly, but not exclusively, if they're not citizens. Today it looked like the FBI and DOJ understand this too. The truth about Islam is anybody is allowed to join but no one is allowed to leave...with his head. And "death to the infidel" is not an abstraction to these people.

"Do you think that someone who writes for the Washington Times should have to denounce Sun Myung Moon, before you take them seriously?"

Besides denigrating the publisher/owner of the paper this was published in, you mentioned nothing to refute his argument.

I think he asked some insightful questions...you?

Does anyone know how to bump the crowd over at the "Treat Muslims with respect" thread over here?

Personally, I agree with Bush that we need to be respectful of our fellow Muslim citizens, but this article raises some interesting questions that may stimulate active debate...

bump!

It is very commendable and very American that we want to guard against harm coming to innocent Arabs and Muslims, especially when most of us have a good idea about the bloodbath, were the tables turned.

No mistake about that... alas the civilized will lay down, roll over, all four up, to be consumed by the savage beast...unless of course somehow it awakens from it's drowsy and dumbed down state of liberal inebriation.

"Arabs should not have to pass a litmus test to have their right protected."

You are, of course, correct about that.

But be advised that all Americans should have their own "litmus test", justifiably so. Does the person next to me, next door, down the street or across town represent a threat to me and my family?

If the honest answer is "mMaybe", then it is incumbent upon the Arab next to me, next door, down the street or across town to lay to rest my doubts.

The writer is suggesting that just such an expression from the Arab community is due. If you are one who doesn't believe such assurance is necessary, or don't want to offer it yourself, you'll find yourself very alone and treated with mistrust. You have no "right" to be otherwise.

Just a word to the wise...

Nuke or be Nuked

I believe you correct. If they had them, they would have already used them. And when they do get them, they will without hesitation press the trigger. This is the state of our affairs simply summed up. The only reason they used airliners to kill thousands was because that was the only means they had. When they acquire the means to destroy the entire nation, and they will if we don't stop them now, they will use them. Make no mistake about it.
