Benjamin Netanyahu has requested an extension to voting hours as millions of Israelis head to the polls in the country’s first elections since Oct 7.
The prime minister’s Likud party petitioned to extend voting beyond 10pm owing to fears of low turnout among his supporters.
It follows Mr Netanyahu’s earlier claim that Arab parties were trying to steal the election by bribing voters with envelopes of cash.
Mr Netanyahu’s main rival, former military chief Gadi Eisenkot and his Yashar party, opposed the extension request.
“The request is intended to lay the groundwork for claims challenging the integrity of the election, following the lies Netanyahu has been spreading since this morning. No unusual event has occurred that would justify approving it,” the party said in a statement.
The latest polling published on Friday put Mr Netanyahu neck-and-neck with Mr Eisenkot, but neither is projected to win the 61 seats needed to form a majority in parliament, heralding weeks or months of negotiations.
At 6pm in Israel (4pm GMT), voter turnout stood at 66.7 per cent, according to the country’s central elections committee – the highest turnout at that hour since records began in 1973.
The vote, widely seen as a referendum on Mr Netanyahu, will see Israelis vote on major issues such as security after Oct 7 and the conscription of ultra-Orthodox Jews into the IDF.

Extending hours on the day of is sketchy. Democrats do that.
Keep finding and counting ballots until you win, then stop finding and counting ballots.
It was denied..polls close at 10pm Israel time
Yeah, but unlike with Lula, it wasn’t after lots of polls had already closed, the ruling doesn’t say only polls that are still open stay open (no polls reopen) and the request is for ALL POLLS to stay open, not just polls in areas favorable to Netanyahu.
They’re NOT comparable events.
Maybe some of the flights from the States were delayed.
So when Bibi pulls ahead we close the polls, right?
My understanding was that he requested a couple of hours. All polls. Clear request, universally applied.
Did he have a notion that late voting was favoring him? Maybe. Or maybe he just thought everyone who wanted to vote should vote. But the action isn’t remotely comparable to what Lula did, not remotely comparable to Gore’s “recount only counties favorable to me - with my bullshit prescriptions for what to do with hanging chads, undervotes, and overvotes,” and it’s not remotely similar to polls being kept open extra hours in cities in lots of states in recent elections, while rural polling station shut down on time.
I’m not absolving Netanyahu - but if you have any reporting that says he didn’t ask for universal poll extensions, and hours before polls were set to close - also with a very specific time of extension (I think it was two hours), then please point it out to me.
That’s not at all the same as your claimed, “close the polls when we’re ahead in the count,” that you suggest, now, is it?
Maybe. The US and Israel both allow dual citizenship and lots of Jews are dual citizens.
In that case, why limit it to registered voters?
Why even limit it to Israeli citizens?
Everybody who wants to vote should get to vote, right?
OK - you clearly hate Netanyahu and have to invest him with criminal intent. If you have anything to throw at Netanyahu that isn’t a fever dream, please let me know.
I’m not defending Netanyahu. I’m laying out the facts as I know them. And I asked you to point out where I might have the facts wrong. All you do is insinuate more unfounded actions on Netanyahu’s behalf.
How does it feel with him living rent-free in your head?
You just said it’s OK to change the rules when things aren’t going your way. That’s all I was responding to.
Umm - no - that’s not what I said. Not even remotely. But let’s look, again, at the actual facts. He made a ***REQUEST*** and it was denied. He didn’t ***CHANGE THE RULES***. He requested a change. I understand the courts turned him down. The reporting sucks so badly, not surprisingly, that we don’t even know if the other parties objected, agreed, if some objected and some agreed. All we know is he requested and he was turned down.
That’s **NOT** changing the rules when things are going your way. It’s a reuqest.
Didn’t extend only in his areas?
Would Bibi be asking for an extension if he were ahead?
What I see is a guy wanting to change the rules because he’s behind.
Would he be asking for an extension if he were ahead?
Like I said and you cut it out when you quoted me: “Did he have a notion that late voting was favoring him? Maybe. Or maybe he just thought everyone who wanted to vote should vote.”
So, like I said, I don’t know. Maybe yes. Maybe no. But I know this. If polls go more in Netanyahu’s favor than you want to see he will still somehow have cheated. Your statements have made that pretty clear.
I was expecting to see it was a Bee post based on that.
I repeat: Would he be asking for an extension if he were ahead?
It’s a simple quesiton.
I doubt it.
