Pope Leo spoke by phone Oct. 16 from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital with Russian President Vladimir Putin, highlighting concern for communities in a Russian-occupied Ukrainian city suffering from worsening food scarcity.

“During the conversation, the Holy Father expressed his deep concern about the grave humanitarian situation in the city of Oleshky, in the Kherson region, and called for a ceasefire to allow the delivery of food and medical assistance, and the voluntary and safe evacuation of the civilian population,” the Holy See Press Office stated Oct. 16.

While speaking with Putin, Pope Leo also “reaffirmed the Holy See’s commitment to promoting dialogue and peace,” the office added.

According to Vatican News, Pope Leo previously spoke by phone with Putin in June of 2025. Oleshky is on the frontline of the Kherson region, which is occupied by Russia.

Oleshky currently has no stable power, water, or heating, according to an Oct. 8 Reuters report. Residents of the city face dangerous roads to get food and water, as landmines are along the main route out of the city, according to the report.

Locals have said the most recent food deliveries to a local store was in May. The outlet added that Russia “has acknowledged critical problems with food and medical supplies in Oleshky and said its military was working to resolve them. It blamed Ukraine for the crisis, saying it was obstructing those supplies getting to the town.”

Pope Leo’s call for a ceasefire and safe evacuation from the city comes as he continues recovering from his Oct. 13 lung surgery. The press office said Oct. 16 that he has continued to carry out his normal daily activities independently and continues respiratory physiotherapy sessions. The Pope also celebrated Mass again in the hospital today.

That stupid war needs to end. The kickbacks are making the treasonous politicians in Europe rich off the dead.

After hanging up the phone, Putin probably laughed and said how many divisions does the pope have?

Cutting off supplies to the military and civilians has been used for centuries as a tactic not to kill them if possible but to make them not want to support or fight the war. Blockaides have been the latest efforts to control something necessary to prosperity.

Well this is a big one :
Can we call it... blood money?

The Trump administration’s talks with Russia on ending the war in Ukraine have expanded to include a multibillion-dollar oil deal that would benefit Middle Eastern business executives with ties to U.S. negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Pooty was probably rolling his eyes while on the phone.

I don’t think Leo can quite understand what “former KGB” means.

Actually, though, there may be no such thing living.

We know you hate President Trump. We don’t need to hear Democrat talking points from you.

Here are you with your “we” again. Even though you are in Moscow.

As you can see in my long posts over the years here on FR I’m a big supporter of President Trump. I was defending him completely against many pro-Russians here on FR concerning his Iran war for example.

However, his lifting of certain sanctions against Russia goes against Republicans in Congress, il helps Iran, and it’s against the US law of 2022.
When I state that it’s a fact. And pointing that out doesn’t mean I oppose Trump like you and your Russian friends usually do here on FR, it simply means I’m pointing out a mistake he did. Such mistakes fragilise him, and I want to avoid that. Evidently.

Nateman: "That stupid war needs to end."

"Stupid"?
In what universe is it "stupid" to defend your country against a foreign invader?
Is Vlad-the-Invader Putin stupid?
Not in his own mind -- in his own mind, Putin is Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great and Stalin the Oppressor come back to wreak vengeance on Russia's enemies.
In Putin's own mind, that's not "stupid", its glorious.

"Stupid" describes us Westerners, Europeans & Americans, who handwave away Putin's aggressions, claiming it's not important, doesn't matter who wins, Russia is our Friend and Russia's opponents are our enemies.
That is as dumb as dumb can get.

Nateman: "The kickbacks are making the treasonous politicians in Europe rich off the dead."

"kickbacks" are a way of life in cultures of corruption like Russia.
They are illegal and prosecuted in western democracies.

Overall, corruption is Europe is prosecuted roughly the same as in the USA, meaning hundreds of cases across many EU countries, however, concentrated mostly in eastern & southern European countries.
Northern countries like Scandinavia have relatively few corruption cases.
All recent prosecutions are garden-variety white-collar crimes and public corruption; none are high profile cases related directly to the Ukraine war.

So, while there are many EU concerns over potential corruption, there are no high-profile cases of public corruption or kickbacks in Europe related to Ukraine.

2025 Corruption Perceptions Index:
blue/yellow = less corrupt, brown/red = most corrupt
