Trump Waives Most Russia Sanctions Passed by Congress

The president signed an executive order to exempt Russia from most parts of a law he signed last month

President Trump is halting implementation of most of the sanctions that were to be imposed on Russia under a bipartisan bill he signed last month.

The announcement came in an executive order on Friday night, and was part of a broader pivot by Trump toward courting Moscow as he seeks to end the war in Ukraine and keep energy prices under control ahead of the midterm elections.

The law, which was championed by and named for the late Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.), targets certain Russian officials and institutions and allows for tariffs of up to 100% on countries that import Russian oil.

In the executive order, Trump stated that waiving implementation of most aspects of the law was “in the national interests of the United States.” The law allows the president to waive the application of sanctions if he tells Congress in writing that it is in the national interest, and submits a report explaining his basis for doing so. Trump’s executive order said he had submitted such a certification but didn’t detail why the waiver is in the national interest.

The decision follows Trump’s surprise announcement to buy Russian diesel fuel after striking a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin and comes as he continues to pressure Ukraine and its president, Volodymyr Zelensky, to end the war that started when Russia invaded.

“A U.S. sanctions blackout, easing pressure on the aggressor, financial rewards for Putin—all of this only encourages him to keep attacking,” Zelensky wrote on social media Saturday morning.

The GOP doesn’t seem to pay any attention to the midterms anymore.

From last night.

Trump puts new Russia sanctions passed by Congress on hold, saying waiver is in US national interest

I'm still trying to figure out why Trump is now against the very bill he was for just a few weeks ago.

But Trump often does one thing and then quickly reverses himself.

Right. Cut the leftist, European globalists out of it. Ukraine is a Thucydides Trap and hopefully Trump has finally realized that.

The Left has fought tooth-and-nail to prevent energy prices from falling.

The Z-Man now looks like Manuel Noriega, and will probably meet the same fate.

Still, he held up better than the Texas fagela...

“I’m still trying to figure out why Trump is now against the very bill he was for just a few weeks ago.”

The bill he signed into law gives him the authority to do so. Circumstances change and you, personally, may not know about them.

Some time ago I published this reply which was roundly criticized as being hyperbolic. It does not seem so hyperbolic now, does it? As predicted, the damage Donald Trump is doing to the Western alliance, to the prestige and power of America around the world, and to our ability to deter aggression by China and its allies has just been severely diminished. The risk of war has just increased, nuclear war at that.

Here is that reply

: Trump has just placed himself among the villains of history. His legacy will be that he acted selfishly to cover his lies, denying that his mismanagement of Iran caused diesel prices to rise. His selfishness did not shrink from sacrificing human life for an illusory gain in domestic politics. History will learn that his treachery gained him no electoral advantage and reduced no diesel fuel prices. Political scientists will record that the eclipse of the MAGA movement was marked from this time.

Decent Americans, recoiling in repugnance, will turn their faces from Donald Trump because he is a liar, a hypocrite with innocent blood on his hands, a man who disgraced his office. Philosophers will dwell on the stunning fall into disgrace of Donald Trump. Children will be told of him as a warning to avoid a similar fate. Playwrights will compare him to Faust and Richard the Third. Preachers will recall David's fall from grace after Bathsheba.

The tragic part is that Donald Trump himself will not bear the whole burden of his trespasses; the whole nation must pay. As we mark Donald Trump's fall, we also mark the time when America relinquished the high ground. America diminished, all of us, the last best hope no longer regarded as the City on the Hill but the object of suspicion. The price will not be only in prestige but in security, in dollars and, inevitably, in blood.

Trump is not merely sacrificing Ukrainian lives to salvage the midterm elections from the consequences of his mismanaged Iran war; he is destroying the Atlantic alliance, isolating America, turning half a billion democratic, Western, prosperous Europeans into competitors rather than partners. He is saving Russia from defeat and rewarding a nuclear tyrant and freeing him to continue his aggressions. Donald Trump is funding an alliance of Russia, Iran, North Korea and China that is determined to destroy the United States and that every day seeks to kill Americans somewhere. Accomplishing nothing positive because the treachery is based on a lie and shockingly selfish, Donald Trump might actually succeed in inverting the balance of power in the world. No statesman anywhere in the world will now be able to assure his people that they will not be betrayed in the course of an alliance with America. In short, it is difficult to identify a single advantage that America now enjoys, including economic strength, that Donald Trump has not damaged by this cynical betrayal.

What Donald Trump did is profoundly immoral, but immoral on a national level because it betrays not just Ukraine, not just the innocent victims in Ukraine, but the American people and the very moral core of America. Donald Trump's action is repugnant to the very moral core of America. We do not let babies be killed to cover our failures.

The consequences pile up because Donald Trump's declension is not an overreach, not a miscalculation, not a partisan fast shuffle; it is a profoundly immoral betrayal that even the cynicism of Donald Trump and his acolytes on this thread cannot dismiss with tasteless mockery. The dead babies and grandmothers who were killed in their beds will not be mocked by Philistines pretending to be conservatives.

Let this be the ultimate reproach of Donald Trump: he let babies be killed to cover his failures.

Impressive language. Thank you. Do you think there is any chance we might win the mid terms? I mean that is ostensibly the cold calculation that led to this change.

Yes, Ukraine is going to have to cede lost territories. How many bodies do you want to throw into the meat grinder to claw those territories back? To the last Ukrainian?

No, sadly, upon reflection, I think this will actually boomerang against Trump's efforts. If so, he will be really weakened not just because he will be reduced to a "phone and a pen" but he will have been shown to be weak at the fulcrum of his power, the power to bring in votes.

Except for the good that Trump might've already done firing up the economy, all attempts to cut spending will be abandoned because under control of the Democrats.

Alas, he will intrigue in foreign affairs all the more to compensate for his diminished capacity domestically, with increasingly baleful results. Expect to see disintegration of the Western alliance and flareups around the world.
