Silicon Valley relies on foreign talent to compete in the global AI race. Some tech leaders say that’s a national security risk.
On paper, Abdulrahman Alfozan seemed like an ideal candidate for one of Silicon Valley’s most coveted artificial intelligence jobs.
The Saudi national attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and landed an engineering job at Meta, according to his LinkedIn page and online records. Alfozan later secured a green card, spoke enthusiastically on a podcast about his Silicon Valley career and was invited to speak at Stanford University, all while working as a part-time partner at a venture capital fund dedicated to expanding the tech ecosystem in the Middle East. He had lived in the United States for more than a decade when he scored a mid-level role at OpenAI last year.
But Alfozan’s arrest on Tuesday for allegedly planting a recording device in OpenAI’s headquarters has ignited a fierce debate about the potential risks of Silicon Valley’s international workforce — employees who often hail from nations seeking to rival the AI superpower status of the U.S.
Foreign nationals have long formed the backbone of the American tech industry, helping U.S. companies surpass their would-be international rivals. Last week, President Donald Trump awarded national medals to six tech titans for their contributions to American innovation. Five of them, including Google co-founder Sergey Brin and SpaceX founder Elon Musk, were immigrants.
As countries battle to dominate AI, some top executives in Silicon Valley have argued that winning what they see as an existential arms race requires aggressively recruiting even more top talent from around the world.
As recently as April, Katrina Mulligan, a senior member of OpenAI’s national security team, called for an “accelerated pathway to citizenship” for such workers, referring to foreign hires as a “national strategic asset” at...

We are so screwed.
Basic National Security 101
Yeah and maybe 2 or 3 might be actual Americans. The bolded opening sentence is incorrect. The companies made a CHOICE to rely on H1B personnel - nobody forced that on them, not even the market.
It is far to late. We have guest worker programs running for the last 20 years or so. Basically none of them have gone home. That gives us over 10 million here right now. And we are worried about one guy putting a bug in a TV set.
I laugh in their faces.
I got Claude to admit that 70% of their America based workforce are NOT American citizens!
Duh.
DOES META FACE SANCTIONS?
Anyone who does not realize that there is massive amounts of espionage happening in Silicone Valley is naive or uninformed
The Bay Area is ground zero for all types of espionage- military and civilian and it’s been that way forever
It’s the perfect storm for spying
Have some wild stories….
I think I wanna check out this silicone valley in person.
when you layoff 50-75% of your IT industry and replace them with offshore know-nothings... you’re gonna get what you’re gonna get.
as for home growing more... keeping 50%+ of the qualified white males out of university level education for 15+ years, replacing them with low IQ democrat base voters, you’re not going to get much of a replacement crop coming up behind those retiring.
that all results in relying on foreign talent.
then you have the drive to avoid hiring American white males.
so yea... good luck
It appears as if we could build a thousand Gitmos and it still wouldn’t be enough to hold all of the spies and treasonous politicians in this country.
Well, at least “Zac” chimed in 😅
We should have stopped or trimmed back these programs years ago. That said, it's better to stop them now than to wait another 20 years.

Six... count ‘em... SIX bylines for a thousand-word article.
One to dictate.👩
One to use children’s crayons to print the words on the wide ruled school tablet.🖍️📖
Four to share the experience mindfully.
