El-Sayed has had a documented, close relationship with his sister—who’s known for her radical views on Islam, sexuality, and gender—for many years
...
Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed served as his "queer Muslim" half-sister's legal guardian in a Sharia marriage a decade ago, according to a documentary obtained by the Washington Free Beacon. He performed the sacred duties years after the sister said her family "had long been MB," or Muslim Brotherhood, something El-Sayed denied on Sunday.
Coming Around, an obscure documentary released in 2023, follows Eman Abdelhadi as she "weighs the decision to come out to her devout Muslim mother." The Free Beacon obtained a copy of the film.
"To postpone coming out" to her and El-Sayed's mother, Fatten Elkomy, Abdelhadi marries her boyfriend, Q, "to give the appearance of strictly hetero relationship interests," according to a plot summary.
El-Sayed is seen in the documentary during Abdelhadi's November 2016 wedding to Q. El-Sayed, who served at the time as Detroit's health director, is not seen in the film, but he is recognizable by his voice and a flash of his hand bearing a ring that El-Sayed often wears.
El-Sayed is heard telling Q about the dowry process, which under Islamic law requires the groom to give money to the bride, which she maintains as property separate from her husband. Abdelhadi told her mother that she wanted Q to pay a "symbolic" dowry of just $1, stating, "I don't believe in the dowry stuff."
The wedding ceremony was conducted under "Shariah" law, according to an Islamic marriage certificate seen in the documentary as El-Sayed—an expert on Sharia law who told the New York Times he had an "obligation" to follow it until the day he dies—walks Q through the dowry process.
"This marriage ceremony of the following couple has been conducted according to the Islamic Law (Shariah)," the document states.
...
Between now and the marriage, he has to give her a dollar," El-Sayed says.
"Okay, are we all good with that?" El-Sayed is heard asking about the $1 dowry.
El-Sayed's role in the process appears to be that of a "wali," or male legal guardian of a bride during an Islamic marriage ceremony. Abdelhadi's father, who was Palestinian, passed away when she was young.
It's not clear that the marriage ceremony—which appears to have happened in the Midwest—was legal under U.S. state law. A thorough public records search found no marriage certificate for either bride or groom.
El-Sayed's complex family ties have come front and center after the Free Beacon reported that Abdelhadi, an assistant professor at the University of Chicago, said that she has numerous Muslim Brotherhood members in her family and that Elkomy—their mother—was active in the Brotherhood in college in Egypt in the 1970s.
...
Abdelhadi wrote that her family "has long been" in the Brotherhood and that many relatives have been "jailed" over their membership in the Islamist group.
Those revelations contradict El-Sayed's assurances this weekend on Meet the Press that he has no family ties or affiliations to the Brotherhood, which spawned Hamas in the 1980s in Gaza and provided the intellectual backbone of ISIS and al Qaeda. The Egyptian Brotherhood, the branch to which El-Sayed's family would have belonged, was sanctioned by the Trump administration as a terrorist group for planning attacks on U.S. interests with Hamas after Oct. 7.
Elkomy, who divorced El-Sayed's father shortly after El-Sayed was born in 1984, went on to work at the Islamic American Relief Agency, which the Treasury Department designated as a terrorist organization in 2004 for providing money and material support to al Qaeda.
...
Abdelhadi has proved a growing liability for El-Sayed in his bitter campaign against Republican Mike Rogers. Rogers has already released ads highlighting Abdelhadi's social media posts. And Abdelhadi, who was arrested last year after assaulting a cop during an anti-ICE rally in Chicago, has defended Hamas's Oct. 7 attack against Israel. She posted a video titled "A blessing for October 7" on the first anniversary of the attack and said on a podcast in October 2024 that "I do believe that Palestinians have a right to violent resistance."
El-Sayed grew up in a separate household from Abdelhadi, though they appear to remain close, well beyond his involvement in her wedding. Q posted a photo of brother and sister taking a selfie in front of the New York City skyline in 2015. El-Sayed transferred money to Abdelhadi in 2020 to help pay for a birthday present for their mother.
El-Sayed has faced questions before over his observation of Sharia, which imposes strict rules, harsh restrictions on women, and medieval-era forms of criminal justice. Sharia law also prohibits Muslims from paying or earning interest from loans.
In 2009, El-Sayed said he has an "obligation" to live in a "Shariah-compliant way," the Free Beacon reported. El-Sayed told the New York Times in a 2009 article that he and his wife obtained a "Shariah-compliant" mortgage on a condo in Ann Arbor.
El-Sayed's private bookshelf also contained a copy of A Thematic Commentary on the Qur'an written by Muslim Brotherhood member Sheikh Mohammed al-Ghazali, who said "the refusal of implemenation [sic] of sharia is apostasy."
El-Sayed's campaign spokeswoman previously said the candidate continues to comply with Sharia law in his personal life, though opposes its implementation by the government.
"Abdul believes in the separation of church and state," campaign spokeswoman Roxie Richner said in August. "While he personally lives by the rules of his faith, as many Americans of various faiths do, Abdul opposes any effort by any religious community to write their faith laws into the laws of our country."
El-Sayed spoke out against a proposed ban on Sharia Law in Oklahoma in 2022, comparing the proposal to the Trail of Tears, in which the U.S. government forced Native Americans to relocate from the southeastern United States to reservations in Oklahoma.
According to the documentary, Q met Abdulhadi while she had a girlfriend. Q's social media posts show he was aware of her sexuality, and even encouraged her "queerness" after they exchanged vows. "That's my bae," he wrote of Abdelhadi after she was featured in an article about LGBTQ Muslims.
Abdelhadi and Q split soon after the newlyweds moved in together, Abdelhadi says in the film. Q appears to be living and working in New York City now, while Abdelhadi is in Chicago, where she researches "religion, gender, identity and demography," according to her University of Chicago web page.

After Abdul cartgorically denied being in the Muslim Brotherhood----b/c he knew how damaging that would be-----his sister's statements surfaced.
why, why, why - must Americans accept this as normal?
One of Reagan’s great mistakes was spelled B-U-S-H.
Based on this, even Muslims shouldn’t vote for this nutburger.
This guy is Sinwar except better dressed. When I see his face I see the face of Hamas, is this what the people of Michigan want, really??
because there are plenty of Americans who want America burned to the ground and rebuilt in their own image
“Noo” Socialist muslim Abdul El-Sayed is also a Quranic queer-enabler!
Imagine this guy in the US Senate. Yikes!
“why, why, why - must Americans accept this as normal?”
Because Orange Man Bad!!
"Is this what the people of Michigan want, really??"
I keep asking myself that, too. Honestly, can the people of MI, MN, NH, ME, TX REALLY choose such horrible and horrific candidates to represent them?
Is that even legal? Off with his head? Streamed online?
because
If El-Sayed does win, I hope the article posted today about the prediction in 1960 about the end of the world happening on November 13, 2026 comes true.
Variations on a TOTALITARIAN theme. Islamic “scholars” will bring these mentally ill MoFos together. The labyrinth of the mind of a psychopath. When the muslim demon knocks at your door, conquers your cities, destroys your civilization.
Another terrorist manure rises to the surface. Manure does float.
