Russia's rapid escalation has thrown into doubt the European Union's multiple support programmes for Ukraine. Diplomats concede it is only a matter of time before leaders address the contentious matter.
The European Union is rapidly coming to terms with the limitations of its multibillion-euro support for Ukraine, as Russia's all-out escalation wrecks the country's finances, depletes its air defences and deepens its reliance on cash-strapped donors.
"This war will last longer than we thought," a European diplomat said, speaking on condition of anonymity. "There's a realisation that needs will continue to present themselves, but it's not yet clear how this will be addressed."
"We must send a clear message that the EU won't change its position and will double down on its support for Ukraine and pressure on Russia," another diplomat said.
Railways, bridges, cargo vessels, power stations, data centres, warehouses, medical centres, schools and kindergartens have all come under Russian airstrikes in recent days. Even the National Academy of Sciences has been targeted.
The relentless bombardment, a calculated mix of ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones, has killed scores of civilians, including over 30 people in Kramatorsk after a glide bomb attack set two public buses ablaze.
On Thursday, Russia plunged Kyiv into darkness, offering a grim preview of a winter that is likely to be the harshest, cruellest yet of the war.
This is "terror against people and life. And it is important that leaders do not ignore what is happening", Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
"Pure and simple: these are war crimes," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, expressing her solidarity.
The escalation has hit the country's war-battered economy particularly hard, as the endless waves of drones disrupt ordinary activity, force businesses to close, raise material costs and eat away at profits.

The Eurocrats thought that the US would pick up the check.
And they're still planning on that. Their plan is to have the Democrats (and RINOs) return to power in Washington.
It’s easy to run up a big bill when someone else is paying. Other people’s money, other people’s lives.

Biden’s boy is in trouble.
the USA's Atlanticists, globalists and deep-staters were once in total control in Washington DC, before Trump came along So the London/Brussels/Davos ghouls had strong reason to believe they could successfully make war with Russia for their own selfish interests.
What’s fascinating is that the same group of Atlanticists who shaped American foreign policy 100 years ago, helping bring the United States into WWI, have continued to influence American foreign policy to this day, including modern global politics and NATO’s role after the end of the Cold War.
Russia immediately escalated its war today after Trump said that Russia and Ukraine had accepted a deal to stop hitting energy infrastructure.
Both Russia and Ukraine denied ever been contacted by anyone in America concerning such a “deal”.
Instead, to prove Trump wrong, Russia immediately targeted Ukrainian energy infrastructure. With a deluge of bombs.
Naturally, Ukraine answered!
Putin could not land in Moscow (!), there were Ukrainian drones everywhere there. His plane had to be diverted to St. Petersburg.
Thus, Putin was denied access to Russia’s capital !
Excellent and quite amusing I must say!
“Internationalism, illustrated by the Bolshevik and by the men to whom all countries are alike provided they can make money out of them, is to me repulsive.”
Sen. Henry Cabot Lodge, Sr., August 12, 1919

Euros are such a bunch of whiny sissies. Annually, during WW2, the US backed Russia with 3% of GDP and the UK with 5%, for a total of 8%. Europe is backing Ukraine with 0.5% of GDP, a trivial % by comparison.

I request that you reformulate that statement so as to make it less ambiguous.
One can sum those first two percentages to yield 8% only if the first two percentages are of the same thing - so I assume that they are all percentages of U.S. GDP.
However, I find those figures (if they are indeed percentages of U.S. GDP) implausible. Thus: Are they, in fact, percentages of the GDP of the respective countries? I.e., the U.S. contributed 3% of Russian GDP to Russia annually; the U.S. contributed 5% of 5% of U.K. GDP to the U.K. annually?
It namely seems much more plausible that the U.S. contributed the equivalent of 3% of Russia's GDP to Russia annually; that would have been a far smaller figure than 3% of U.S. GDP annually.
Please advise!

You are comparing the entire WW2 with Russia’s “special operation” against Ukraine ??
Are you serious? You can’t compare!
It’s good to know though that Russia spends 40% of its entire national budget for its delinquent acts of war against Ukraine.
And DESPITE all that money, after 5 years of war and with massive support of tens of thousands of communist North Korean troops, and tens of thousands of Islamic Chechen troops and abd billions in subsidies from Communist China and about 1,5 million Russian casualties… well… all of that… and Russia is STILL only occupying 20% of Ukraine’s territory and loosing ground… against Christian Ukraine fighting ALONE.

Sorry for the double post… huge latency on the site right now
Incompetent, coke snorting EU leaders can’t even stop the chaos in their own countries let alone help Ukraine.
Failed leadership in the EU is destroying most of Europe.

That was in part why the US and everyone else was in a hurry to end the war. Casualties aside, the downside of this kind of economic mobilization long term wasn’t just inflation, but a lurch towards hyperinflation. It needed to end before the wheels came off. Annual US budget deficits in WW2 peaked at 27% of GDP. (This year’s, a high number, is about 7%). The war caused the US debt to GDP ratio to go from 0.4 to 1.1, an increase of 0.7 in just 4 years. Took almost 40 years for that 0.7 increase to occur in (relative to WW2) peacetime (1985 to 2025).
The scale of mobilization was a thing of wonder. The continental US was not under immediate threat. Hawaii was an extremely marginal territory known mainly for pineapples. For any country to do this kind of mobilization to fight wars an ocean away on each side - no other country on earth throughout history has done anything like this. FDR was a political giant in the way he managed to get the American public on board. After declaring war on Germany, the British and French sat on their haunches for 9 months, even though Germany was next door. Within 11 months after declaring war on Germany, the US was mounting a major amphibious effort in North Africa, which required a 3,500 mile ocean crossing.
Not the word I would have used for the guy who was elected in 1940 on the promise to keep us out of the war.
”The question was how we should maneuver them into the position of firing the first shot without allowing too much danger to ourselves. . . .” - Henry Stimson (Secretary of War) diary entry Nov. 25, 1941
But FDR never managed, and indeed never tried, to get the American people on board to save Jews he knew were being murdered. History has judged him ever since.
Trump is not an FDR, the Giant; he is a pygmy because he is condoning Russian war crimes against Ukrainian civilian victims.
In thread after thread on this subject, self-righteous Trump bots time and again express the most callous disdain for the innocent lives dying in Ukraine, left exposed and betrayed by us, and by Donald Trump especially. We inveigled the Ukrainians to fight this war, we encouraged and armed them, and now Donald Trump abandons them and their children to a murderous tyrant.
Do not swallow Trump's hypocrisy that he is interested only in stopping bloodshed in Ukraine, even as his family cuts deals, even as he intensifies the conflict by selling arms for American profit.
It might be cool to talk about dollars rather than lives, but it is immoral- yes, I said it, immoral- to boast of virtue when in fact we are responsible for blood and death. And that responsibility was just compounded by Donald Trump through his cynical diesel deal that will extend the war, sacrifice more innocent Ukrainians, and inevitably rupture America's relationship with allies around the world who will be revolted by this latest betrayal.
Boast on, make broad your show of perverted virtue, but beware the judgment of history.
