LONDON (AP) — The fate of the Chagos Islands is in the hands of one man almost half a world away.
The contested Indian Ocean archipelago that is home to a strategically important U.K.-U.S. military base has been in limbo since U.S. President Donald Trump in January criticized a deal by the U.K. government to transfer sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius.
U.K. Defense Secretary Wes Streeting said Wednesday that officials are reviewing the pact after Trump renewed his criticism of the U.K.-Mauritius agreement, calling it a “terrible deal,” during his first meeting with Prime Minister Andy Burnham in New York.
Streeting said they “can’t go ahead without American support.”
It’s not clear what it will take to win back U.S. approval, though. The Trump administration had previously welcomed the agreement as a way to ensure the security of the joint military base on Diego Garcia, the largest of the island chain.

“The U.K. split the Chagos Islands away from Mauritius, a former British colony, in 1965” - this implies that the Chagos used to belong to Mauritius. They never did. In fact, until France brought people to work, they were unpopulated. Also, Britain has been beset by protests by descendants of those workers *on the grounds that they do NOT want to come under Mauritius’ jurisdiction
under no circumstance should the USA release its sovereign hold of this vital military base ... period ...
Britain has been in retreat since the end of WWII.
A Democrat President
Average Americans don’t see it, but Trump is in a non-shooting war with UK/EU globalists.
These are the remnants of the British Empire, who having lost their territory, implanted and maintain themselves in organs of soft-power and control - particularly, global finance, EU banks, media, NGOs, old “multilateral institutions, etc...
They have run all the coup (and probably assassination) attempts against Trump since “Russia-gate.”
They are getting desperate to stop Trump and keep United States “nationalists” (vs. DC Atlanticists) in check.
Just occupy, and claim it from the UK.
As US territory now.
Come on Trump.
We need that base on Diego Garcia. Eff the UK!
Just acknowledge Danish control as an archipelago of Greenland. Then use the Danish treaty to keep the base.
Since, as usual, the UK can’t even defend itself from the 1 million Muslims it’s getting weekly, just like ww2 with the backstabbing liar Montgomery and the 6 terrorists allowed free on bail, screw the UK; support Argentina in the next fight. Meanwhile DJT make a deal for the ex us bases in Morocco sidii simainne as a example and obtain landing rights for USAF aircraft screw the EU an UK hugely lived there for 3.5 years and they called thee 2 american usaf families COLONIALISTS this in a village with 3 flush toilets 2 usaf and 1 english I am sick of us supporting a nation we kicked out in 1776. They are not friends and never were.
Offer the islands to Argentina in return for Argentina dropping its claim to the Malvinas.
