Pedro Sánchez is the undisputed leader of the European Left. But his time is running out.
The Spanish prime minister rolled the dice on a snap election that risks bringing the hard-Right Vox into national government for the first time.
The poll-leading centre-Right Partido Popular (PP) will need Vox as coalition partners if it is to take power, which will mean the most Right-wing Spanish government since Franco.
It’s a nightmare scenario for Mr Sánchez, who prides himself on his progressive policies.

But if Mr Sanchez’s gamble backfires this time, the already small number of centre-Left leaders in Europe will be reduced to Mr Burnham, Denmark’s Mette Frederiksen and Malta’s Robert Abela.
Sweden’s next government still hangs in the balance of coalition negotiations after an election won by the centre-Left.
A victory for the PP and Vox will build momentum behind Europe’s insurgent populist parties, which are already buoyed by two electoral victories for the AfD in East Germany last month.
France, Italy and Poland, three of the most consequential EU member states, will hold elections next year.
Victory for Marine Le Pen, Giorgia Meloni and her Polish allies in the European Parliament, the Law and Justice Party, will see the EU swing further to the Right and the Left further diminished.

I don’t know anything about Frederiksen and Abela, but I definitely would not categorize Burnham as “centre-Left.” He’s a flaming leftist in my opinion, just like his predecessor, the failure Keir Starmer.
