Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is urging “a resolution” to the Iran war, sending the strongest signal to date that Republicans on Capitol Hill are feeling the political sting of the long-drawn conflict heading into the midterm elections.
“It’s been a priority and an objective of every administration, for 50 years nearly, to ensure that Iran didn’t have a nuclear capability. Now that’s done. Operation Epic Fury was an epic success. … The world is safer because of it,” Johnson said in an interview with a local TV station.
“But now we’ve got to bring that to a resolution.”
Johnson did not call for an immediate end to the conflict, nor did he name specific steps the administration could take to wind it down. But his message echoes the calls from a growing number of vulnerable Republicans in both chambers who have emerged in recent days to urge an end to the war for the sake of bringing down domestic consumer costs.
“Iowans are being squeezed and shouldn’t have to foot the bill at the pump or the checkout line for the war in Iran,” Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa), who is running for Senate, wrote Tuesday on the social platform X.
She’s calling for a suspension of the federal gas tax and a halt to diesel exports, among other steps.
“These actions to lower costs are needed ASAP,” she said, “and the war needs to be brought to a successful and immediate end.”
Democrats have criticized the war in Iran from the start, and in the final stretch of the campaign they’re going out of their way to highlight the direct link between the conflict and the spike in consumer costs at home, particularly on gas, diesel and fertilizer.

It is so much like the Lyndon B Johnson era I lived through.
Alpha male was too stubborn to admit the American people were turning against the war, he thought he was above it all, and he brought down all the people loyal to his losing cause (Hubert Humphrey and others) while tens of millions of young people and independents of all ages demanded the war be ended now. Allowed Nixon to come in with law and order (my favorite) and moderate Republicans winning a landslide for his re-election.
And LBJ is not known as an American hero for fighting Communism in Southeast Asia-—the noble cause he once promoted.
The statement twice from Trump that the war will fizzle out AFTER THE MIDTERMS is chilling. We will lose the elections and be on the road to losing our freedoms due to the rise of socialism because he didn’t end the Iran War back in May at the latest.
Ironically, he will have no one (exaggerated but is nearly true) to honor his true achievements as he is set on the shelf after losing the midterms. Tragic.

That war went on for four more years.
Trump told us in June 2025 that Iran’s nuclear capability was “obliterated”, the greatest air mission since World War II. It was so perfect that Trump told us that we didn’t even need to go clean up the nuclear dust. Fast forward 9 months and we enter a war to “ensure that Iran doesn’t get a nuclear weapon”. So which is it? Were we being gaslit then, gaslit now, or both times?
You have one of the loudest mouths on here denouncing anyone who dares question Trump, or by extension, the legitimacy of anything our government tells us. Put your critical thinking hat on and start asking the right questions and not reflexively clap at everything Trump does or denounce those that question it. Trump was and is the infinitely better option than Commala, but this war was a huge mistake and it’s going to cost us the mid-terms and the last 2 years of anything productive that might have gotten accomplished.

He could have directed more resources to deportations (and thus less crime), and lowered inflation, deficits and interest rates (and thus built a healthier economy).
Instead, his legacy will be that of Bush 3.
Trump is just getting started. The changes he makes will be constitutional and they will be binding. He will not hand our country over to AOCs handlers to turn it into a Muslim disaster
