Embattled German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has vowed to stay on despite exit polls in two local elections suggesting damaging defeats for his centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party.
In the north-eastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the party was projected to only just scrape into parliament, while the AfD was on track to win the most votes. Merz called the result "a disaster" for his party.
In Berlin, the ruling CDU was also expected to be beaten by Die Linke (The Left).
Merz is under mounting pressure, with poor approval ratings and rumours he could even be replaced mid-term in a so-called chancellor swap.
Votes took place on Sunday, a fortnight after the CDU saw its vote halved as the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) won a major victory in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

Sorry, but if I have read his speech properly, he didn’t say anything like that. He said that the EU evolved as a consequence of WW 2 damages and of the division of Europe, which made a pooling of the resources necessary, all over Western Europe. He also told a poignant story of the old oak tree near Weimar, Germany.
By the way, the escalation of World War One was mostly concocted in Paris and St. Petersburg (remember the visit of French President Poincaré to St. Petersburg in late July 1914, please) - probably with the connivance of the shady Sir Edward Grey in London (after the assassination of the Austro-Hungarian Crown Prince by a group of very short-sighted Serbian men).
Needless to say, in any war, the loser always gets the blame, at least on paper (the era between the Thirty Years War and World War One was the laudable exception).
Paper, however, is patient, as we say in German…🙂
I have read the speech too. Conveniently left out is where the resources that needed to be “pooled” came from. Carney should Marshall what is left of his intellect and come up with a better Plan.
It happened frequently ever since the Roman Empire. Europeans have always been warlike and treacherous. Only since the end of WWII did they choke their ambitions under so-called international law and supranational organizations like the EU, but they are really just as treacherous as ever.
True, he forgot about the Marshall Plan, sadly.
However, after the Marshall Plan, it was clear to anybody at the time around 1950, that the economies of Western Europe had to cooperate, in order to banish hunger and need. The second factor was the threat of the Eastern Bloc, which had become especially acute with the war in Korea…
