Trafalgar Square isn’t some random patch of concrete where London needed something colorful to fill an empty corner.
This is one of the most famous historic spaces in Britain.
Nelson’s Column towers over the square. Statues of King George IV, Sir Henry Havelock, and Sir Charles James Napier have stood there for generations. Whatever anybody thinks of those men today, they represent actual pieces of British history.
And now, into the middle of all that comes Lady in Blue…
She’s an overweight black woman in a bright, skin-tight blue dress, striding forward on the Fourth Plinth. The idea is that she represents a contemporary British “everywoman.”
And boy, does she stick out like an obese sore thumb.
Of course, that’s part of the point of modern art. Sometimes you’re supposed to look at something and wonder what the hell you’re looking at. But this one lands differently because public statues have become such a political obsession for the left.
We’ve spent years watching fights over which old historical figures deserve to remain standing, which ones should be tore down, and who should replace them. So, yes, dropping a random “everywoman” into historic Trafalgar Square was always going to raise a pretty obvious question…
What exactly are we honoring here?
If somebody stuck a statue of a completely ordinary white woman in the square, complete with a Karen haircut, glasses, khakis, and a button-down shirt, and told everybody she represented “everywoman,” it would look just as ridiculous and stupid as this one does.
At some point, public history starts looking less like history and more like a DEI experiment gone wrong.
To really understand why this statue has rubbed people the wrong way, you have to look at where it was placed.

I may be wrong, but I think the statue is to honor Michelle Obama. The dimensions are strikingly similar.
At what point do we revert to people & institutions being given the respect they earn not the respect they demand?
The statue’s name is “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”

I visited a good number of important cities when I traveled abroad representing a fortune 100 company in the 1980s.
After I left that job, I did not continue my international travels as a tourist, other than a few trips to Mexico and Costa Rica, but always planned to some day.
Now, as I see the great historic cities in scenes from old movies - it no longer stirs that urge to travel - but instead comes the realization that on most cases it’s too late - what I wanted to see is gone for the most part and I am probably not welcome there anyway.
Give it 50 or so years and it will be as offensive as Chief Wahoo in Cleveland! They will become outraged by the Caricature!
