DENVER (KDVR) — A United Airlines 9/11 commemoration flyover has been canceled due to “concerns in the community.”
The commemorative flyover, which was set to feature a United Boeing 777 followed by four fighter jets, was initially scheduled for the 25th anniversary of 9/11 on Friday at Denver International Airport.
Friday’s flyover was strategically planned for 9:03 a.m., the exact moment terrorists crashed United Flight 175 into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
However, the company said in a statement on Wednesday that the flyover was suspended, citing public concerns.
“As part of these events, the airline had also planned an aircraft flyover, a meaningful gesture to honor the memory of those lost within the pilot community, but will suspend those plans due to concerns in the community and instead carry on with the other events of the day,” said Russell Carlton, a spokesperson for United Airlines.
The flyover was planned to be a private memorial and was not open to the public. However, since the planes would be visible, the city of Denver and the Denver Office of Emergency Management previously posted about the flyover to raise public awareness.
“Denver supports honoring the victims of 9/11 as well as first responders. However, we also realize this may be jarring, and as a result, our Office of Emergency Management has been working diligently to ensure people aren’t surprised,” said the Office of Denver Mayor Mike Johnston in a statement.
While the flyover was canceled, United Airlines said it will still unveil a 9-foot-11-inch-tall monument of steel from the World Trade Center at its Flight Training Center.

· UPDATE: on 9/11 Memorial Flyover
United Airlines has canceled its planned 9/11 memorial aircraft flyover in City and County of Denver Government following concerns raised by members of the community. The airline’s other planned 9/11 remembrance events will continue as scheduled.
There will be no aircraft flyover associated with the memorial events on Friday, Sept. 11.
United and City and County of Denver Government appreciate everyone who shared questions and concerns with us as we worked with United and our public safety partners to keep the community informed. _____________________________________________________ Seeing something unusual in the Denver sky on September 11?
Here's why.
As part of a 9/11 memorial tribute, United Airlines will conduct a planned flyover over City and County of Denver Government featuring a Boeing 777 accompanied by F-16 aircraft from Buckley Air Force Base. Planes will be visible around 9:03am.
Because of the size and flight profile of the aircraft, the flyover may be:
• Highly visible from parts of Denver
• Noticeable by sound
• More noticeable than a typical aircraft overhead
• Brief, but potentially surprising if you aren't aware it's happening
There is no emergency. This is a planned memorial event. Join us in taking a moment to remember and honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001.
“will suspend those plans due to concerns in the community”, dimocrats and pussies ruin everything.
Pussies.
Instead of a flyover Denver TV should simulcast footage of ordinary Americans leaping from the towers’ flames and face planting into a pool of goo on the sidewalk below. I still have that forbidden footage on a hard drive somewhere.
Yup.
Flyover seems a bit tone-deaf especially where there are skyscrapers.
I don't believe that any of the hijacked planes were 777s. Two were 767s, and two were 757s. (One of each type from each targeted airline).
This sounds like an ill conceived promotional gimmick in very poor taste.

I love that both of y’all said “pussies”. My thought exactly!
Denver pops up a bit from the prairie in the downtown.
I somehow figured that Buckley Air Force Base had been reduced to a military golf course.
This would be like doing a flyover of Pearl Harbor in 1966 with Mitsubishi-engined planes.
“Citing public concerns”
United has a lot of business in the Middle East and even more if you count the rich Arab dudes around the around the world, particularly Europe these days...so they really should have called ISIS first, rather than waiting on official permission.
Exactly.
Muzz.
.

Responders outside of the towers are still haunted by the sound of the “splats”.
I’d like to know how many red states are having flyovers tomorrow.
Yup, still hard to see and think about.
Well, the one time I took the USS Arizona tour, the majority of tourists on the boat were Japanese.
Go figure
I have never heard of a single incident involving disrespectful or unruly Japanese tourists at the memorial. They generally dress modestly, and comport themselves appropriately.
I wish I could say the same about American tourists visiting the WTC Memorial!
Regards,
Muslims dominate again.....
Didn’t really the public in Denver were Muslims.
