Trump makes case for Iran war, promises $5,000 payouts if GOP wins midterms
Washington Post ^ | 9/10/26 | Isaac Arnsdorf and Natalie Allison

President Donald Trump used the Republican Party’s first midterm convention to justify the Iran war rather than trying to put it behind him, as escalating violence and spiking oil prices loomed over the elaborate Trump-centered showcase in Dallas.

In a speech billed as an opening argument for the peak campaign season, he defended his record and encouraged supporters to vote as if he were on the ballot. He also debuted a new enticement, promising to reward Republican congressional majorities by giving every American a $5,000 dividend to spend within the country.

It would seem the political choices are between insane communist/leftist/woke ideologues and utterly corrupt imperialist Trump/MAGA thugs. Literally trying to buy votes in the most crass way possible.

I'm sick of this. I voted for Trump twice on the understanding he would fight the unelected shadow government in control of Washington and restore constitutional government. He's revealed himself as an egomaniacal thug. In Venezuela for example he simply removed one man, kept the entire rest of their corrupt socialist government, has suppressed democracy there, and replaced Cuba with himself as the great exploiter of the people of Venezuela. All in an effort to depress oil prices, which in turn undercuts US oil producers. But I guess he's counting on more people being bribed by cheap stolen oil than are hurt on the production side.

This is a choice between insanity and corruption. Neither is acceptable.

When all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, “What portion do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse; To your tents, O Israel! Now look after your own house, David!” So Israel departed to their tents. (I Kings 12:16)

every American a $5,000 dividend

Great idea, clearly we are over taxed. This would cost less than the forgiveness of student debt Biden was promising.

If you are not for buying votes with taxpayers’ money, you are a RINO.

The internal Republican polls must be dreadful.

Real smart. As if inflation wasn’t bad enough.

“I voted for Trump twice on the understanding he would fight the unelected shadow government in control of Washington”

I highly doubt your honesty. So let’s put it to the test:

1. What is the shadow government?

I’m thinking gridlock the next two years is the best we can hope for following Dem gains in the upcoming elections. And then maybe, just maybe, people will have had enough of Dem nonsense and maybe, just maybe, Reps will come up with a decent slate of candidates in 2028 who run on constitutionalism rather than corruption of their own.

Somebody please identify where there’s any Constitutional authority for Trump to do any of this.

“utterly corrupt imperialist Trump/MAGA thugs”

You call Trump corrupt in the absence of corruption.

Was this a brain event, or a mind event? And how will you restore your functioning?

This dude should have just listened to himself:

It seems like every time he opens his mouth, the first thing that comes to mind is: "George W. Trump."

How many times have we heard that one. It will never happen. The rats are sitting comfortably on the 20 of the 80/20 issues but it would seem the clueless middle and the women are about to hand them Congress. This 5,000 payoff is the biggest cringe yet.

The reasons for the war aside, the Constitution requires the president to make the argument to Congress. Not to some party convention.

And yeah, I know presidents of both parties do it. Rename the conflict as something other than a war. Or just ignore the Constitution altogether. And Congress doesn’t seem to mind. But it’s a dangerous path to be on.

Fun fact: The last time Congress declared war was on June 5, 1942. The declaration was against Nazi allies Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria.

He could call it a tax refund like Obama called the ACA a tax (and the Supremes agreed).

Only if the source of the money is something other than borrowing.

Don't forget the Dems are promising universal free Health Care. The free part will be much more than $5000 a head.

1. What is the shadow government?

It is pretty widely recognized, so people seeing it from different perspectives have given it different names. The Managerial Elites. The Deep State. The Swamp. The Bureaucracy. It's all facets of the same thing - the millions of unelected, basically unaccountable bureaucrats and agents of the alphabet agencies that largely decide and act on policy, create regulations and usurp power from the elected government at every turn.

The elected government still exists, and through laborious court battles and other skirmishes sometimes the shadow government is pushed back for a space. But it is always there, always seeking to grow and nibble away at the authority of the elected government at each opportunity.

I shouldn't have to convince you of the reality of this shadow government, because its actions are known and observed daily. From Generals saying they will warn China if the elected government acts against them to the SEC harassing and running companies out of the US or out of business that were completely outside of its legislatively-declared jurisdiction to EPA regulatory regimes to the endless trampling of the 9th and 10th amendments their activity is everywhere.

I didn't bother voting for Trump in 2016 because I correctly guessed he didn't understand greatest problem America faced was this usurpation of government by self-anointed elites who felt that they, with their education and training and self-righteous religious worldview, were the natural rulers and that power could not be entrusted to the 'ignorant' masses. By 2020 it was clear he'd learned his lesson and I thought he was ready to fight. But he only trimmed the thorns (rather than digging up the roots) once he got back into power, and in recent months he's morphed into just a slightly different manifestation of this hideous strength.

If you accuse Trump of corruption but are unable to name and describe the “corruption,” then you have no credibility.

I’m well aware of the shadow government.

So is Trump. This is why he’s destroying them.

Next question for you:

How does the shadow government conduct its business?
