A key US senator wants fellow lawmakers to consider revoking the National Education Association’s congressional charter.
What’s to consider? The union, the nation’s largest representing teachers, clearly hasn’t met its obligations under the charter; Congress should revoke it pronto.
Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), who chairs the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, is urging colleagues to reconsider the NEA’s charter specifically over its links to a number of far-left nonprofits, including the Zinn Education Project and Rethinking Schools, and its alleged out-of-control financial mismanagement.
Those and other NEA-linked groups push agendas that actually justify the terrorism and murders committed by the Black Panther Party and push for indoctrinating young kids with gender extremism.
“Children are struggling to read and to do basic math. Instead of helping students succeed, teachers’ unions are injecting a dangerous, anti-American agenda into our classrooms,” fumes Cassidy.
“Parents deserve to send their children to school without worrying that they will be indoctrinated with DEI and taught that Americans have ‘misplaced faith’ in our institutions.”
A charter revocation wouldn’t stop the NEA from operating, but it would deliver a severe reputational blow to the group.
It’s one that’s long overdue —- and not only because the union has focused on hard-left politics instead of history, geography, math and science.
In fact, the NEA, along with the American Federation of Teachers, has presided over a decades-long effort to completely wreck any meaningful standards in education in order to shield their millions of members from any accountability.
At the same time, they fought for ever fatter paychecks and pensions, while spending millions in union dues on radical-left political causes.
After the 2020 George Floyd riots, both the NEA and the AFT ratcheted up their leftist activism and fought to turn America’s classrooms into BLM-indoctrination factories.

Former Teacher Union President put it best when he said: “When schoolchildren start paying union dues, that’s when I’ll start representing the interests of schoolchildren”
To put it another way, the Teachers’ Unions are doing EVERYTHING expected of a union - representing their dues payers, and doing a damn good job of it. For example, most people STILL think teachers are underpaid, but those days are long gone, and they get raises FAR FASTER than those in real professions. As to kids, it’s simply NOT the job of their union to make sure kids actually get an education, that’s the job of their PARENTS. The job of the union is to get teachers the most money for the least amount of work - and they’re damn good at it.
Local NEA affiliates have basically been in defiance of the SCOTUS decision regarding forced union dues by claiming that members can only withdraw during a very limited window around contract negotiation time.
Once the contract is negotiated the members are stuck.

The NEA should be declared a subversive organization and a clear and present danger.
Yes, revoke the charter. The NEA belongs to the demoncRATS. Revoke the charter. They can’t even police their own. How many pedophiles are in the ranks of the NEA. Too many to count.
They would do much better not to pay the administration based on graduation rate. This has stripped the teachers of the power to give any child a failing grade when he doesn’t do any work. Everyone passes, everyone gets an A, everyone graduates. The children soon realize that actually studying is a sucker’s game.
And all dogs go to heaven.

I’m not reflectively anti-union. I could tell you good stories about them. And many more bad stories. All from personal experience.
But I must ask: Why in the world should a union have a congressional charter? I looked it up. Such a thing is largely symbolic. Nevertheless, it looks like Congress is taking sides here.

Great point. Nowadays, school administrators get bonuses and promotions based on raising their graduation rates.And lowering their suspension rates.
So guess what? Everyone passes. And disruptive students are not disciplined. Trust me on this. The policy drives most teachers crazy.
It’s the perfect storm. And it’s the decent students who are hurt the most.

During the years when Mrs. L was forced to pay their outrageous dues they NEVER once supported a Republican for any race: Local, State, or National.
Congress granted the National Education Association (NEA) a useless federal congressional charter in 1906 to massage the teachers for votes, flippantly saying they wanted to, “elevate the character and advance the interests of the profession of teaching; and to promote the cause of education in the US.”

The useless charter was supposed to “support and organize professional standards” for teachers nationwide. The charter incorporated them as the National Education Association of the US, giving it a phony “formal national status” alongside other patriotic and non-profit groups.
At the time, organizations sought federal charters
to get “credibility” and to instill “public trust.”
Here’s a fun fact: A 2018 Supreme Court ruling made paying public sector union dues optional.
I’m a retired public school teacher. I advise my friends who are still teaching to think carefully before leaving the union. Yes, you’ll save quite a bit of money. And you’ll starve the beast.
But in my district at least, the union and the school administrators have entered into an evil alliance.
The union tells the district they will not raise a finger to help teachers who are not in the union. Then the district starts to harass those teachers, especially the ones near (or at the top) of the salary scale. Sometimes such teachers make a minor misstep, and are fired. It’s a way for the district to save money.
Good, non-union teachers gone. I’ve seen that happen many times.
PS Don’t assume tenure will protect a non-union teacher. Tenured public school teachers have way less protection than do tenured college professors.
Sometimes the Union miss-leaders are literally in bed with the Administration.
And then it doesn’t matter if you are dues-paying or not; if you’re near the top of the scale you will be harassed into early retirement—at best.
DeSantis took on the teacher’s unions in Florida. The issue was over payroll deductions for union dues. I think the unions are still fighting the state in court. But it shows there is one Governor that is willing to go up against the beast.
