Germany Blames Russia for Explosive Drones Sent to Leipzig Airport

BERLIN—Germany accused Russia of being behind a plot to send explosive drones to a German airport last month and pledged to retaliate against Moscow, a rare public attribution of blame in the widening campaign of incursions and sabotage across NATO territory.

“We do not consider ourselves at war but we are the daily target of hybrid warfare,” said German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, announcing the findings Tuesday from an investigation into the incident at Germany’s Leipzig airport last month, for which he said Russia was responsible.

The drone incident marked a serious escalation in what European security and military officials have described as Moscow’s probing attacks on NATO defenses. Had it caused an explosion deep inside German territory, it could have amounted to an act of war.

German investigators had found three custom-made drones involved in the failed attack: Two in a field and one in the perimeter of the airport near Ukrainian-owned cargo planes, a German security official said. All were functional, laden with explosives, and had been professionally constructed, using some off-the-shelf components, yet had failed to detonate.

The drones were probably transported to Leipzig by low-level agents, the official added, but would have been piloted by people much farther away. Investigators had connected certain individuals to the drones in a way that supported the attribution, the person said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin later rejected Germany’s conclusions, accusing Berlin of fabricating the evidence because Merz’s “domestic political situation…is difficult” due to “obvious economic miscalculations.” Putin said Germany is painting Russia as an aggressor to deflect attention.

“Where’s the evidence?” Putin said of Germany’s accusation. “Well, they planted some evidence,” he said.

In response to the alleged attack, the German government said it would close the last Russian consulate in the country,

It is fascinating watching dueling narratives play themselves out. Unexploded drones, with accusation flying, versus:

"A second suspect has been arrested in relation to the Nord Stream gas pipeline explosions in 2022, German prosecutors said on Wednesday.

"Croatian police, acting on a European arrest warrant, detained a Ukrainian national in Pula.

" 'The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office had Ukrainian Vladimir Z. arrested in Pula (Croatia) by local police forces,' prosecutors said.

"They said that the man, a trained scuba diver, 'is strongly suspected of jointly causing explosions.'

"The prosecutors said they were pursuing the man's extradition from Croatia.

"He is reported to have previously been detained in Poland in September 2025 but was released after an extradition request from Germany was turned down. "

Nord Stream: Second suspect arrested over pipeline blasts Deutsche Welle ( with AFP, Reuters and dpa ), 19 August 2026.

How often have we read, after an "allah akbar" screaming attack, that the police have "yet to establish a motive?

Between national leaders of all flavors talking "smack" in all directions, it's hard to tell which player on which team is drifting off target.

LOL, Russia denies the attempted attack on the same day Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev has said that Germany deserves a direct strike against all facilities producing military equipment for Ukraine, and possibly against other locations in Berlin as well.
