Haitian, 20, takes his own life after losing TPS status, advocacy group says

Pierre Damas Bel, who arrived in the U.S. in 2024 to reunite with his parents who had fled Haiti, got out of his vehicle on an interstate in Springfield, Ohio, and walked into traffic, law enforcement officials told local news outlets.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol told ABC News it is investigating Bel's death. In a statement, the agency confirmed that Bel parked on Interstate 70, exited his Toyota and entered the westbound lanes of the highway.

Bel was one of the more than 350,000 Haitian immigrants who lost TPS status after the Supreme Court in June cleared the way for the Trump administration to end the program, which provides work authorization and protection from deportation to migrants fleeing countries that are deemed unsafe due to armed conflicts or natural disasters.

He had recently been fitted with a GPS ankle monitor by the Department of Homeland Security as part of the department's effort to track former TPS holders, according to posts on his social media account.

"I came to this country to pursue my education, I didn't come here to commit a crime or hurt anyone," Bel posted in July. "Yet now I'm walking through the streets of the United States with a GPS monitor on my leg, carrying a feeling of shame and humiliation that I never imagined I would experience."

'I didn't come here to commit a crime or hurt anyone," Bel posted in July.'

And yet he did.

The parents and family should be deported based on their comments.

I feel bad for the drivers of th cars that struck him.

No matter what their politics are, that must have been traumatic.

It was a very selfish act.

A terrible crime against the innocent driver who couldn’t help running into him. That human has to live with that horrible scene in his or her mind from now on due to the actions of that Haitian.

“Mr. Bel has made strides and garnered achievements in a relatively short amount of time despite having to navigate an unfamiliar environment,” wrote his senior Marine instructor for the JROTC. “Mr. Bel exhibits the type of individual character that makes our society great. He has my highest endorsement and utmost character that he will make us proud and be value added to our nation.”

To the best of my knowledge, I have never met anyone from Haiti. I do, however, have a dear friend from the Dominican Republic, and he says most Dominicans don’t want them in their country either. So there’s that.

one of the more than 350,000 Haitian immigrants who lost TPS status...

Maybe they were on their way to medical school in the US and could have cured diabetes or other diseases.

Or maybe just loafing, committing crimes and sponging off entitlements from working taxpayers.

I don’t believe ABC reported on the J6 defendants who took their own lives rather than suffer the injustice of the Biden DOJ.

In nearly all cases, someone has to clean up the mess the suicide leaves behind. Even worse it is often a loved one. Yes, a selfish act.

I wonder which is more expensive: A funeral or deportation to Haiti. Because I’m relatively certain that the taxpayers will be paying for it.

There must be more to the story. He didn’t try to move to any other country that is not USA nor Haiti?

A work friend and his wife were driving through Atlanta. A young girl, angry with her boyfriend made him pull over on the interstate. She got out of the car and sprinted in front of him. My buddy had no time to react and he killed her.

I’m not sure what the dynamics were but my buddy and his wife ended up divorced, and he said it started right there. He was devastated and depressed.

As far as this guy goes, I’m guessing that he would not have made a good citizen as clearly, there were a few screws loose.
