California’s bullet train could have a new end point: Brokeville, USA. The state’s beleaguered high-speed rail line is once again careening toward a financial cliff, as a new report — delivered last month to Gov. Gavin Newsom and legislators — says the project could run out of cash by the end of next year.
The Office of the Inspector General warned that the California High-Speed Rail Authority’s funds could dry up as soon as December 2027 unless it secures financing — and the authority would need to borrow as much as $9.5 billion over five years just to keep construction on schedule.
Inspector General Benjamin Belnap’s report noted that high-speed rail officials have “obscured basic facts about the project, hindering lawmakers’ ability to provide effective oversight of the project.”

Not one foot of track put down and they run out of loot? Sounds fishy...
The Trump administration did an audit of what they could without California’s help, and they stopped payments.
The grift is strong with this one
The estimated cost of California’s long‑troubled high‑speed rail project has soared past $120 billion.
In a 60 Minutes report on CBS News, officials said they now believe the rail line linking Los Angeles and San Francisco could ultimately cost about $126 billion, roughly triple the original price tag approved by voters in 2008, when the California High-Speed Rail Authority estimated it would cost $45 billion.
Politicians, including Gov. Gavin Newsom, have stated that voters initially approved $33 billion for the project.
State officials say the earliest projected opening for the first phase, running from Kern County to Merced, has slipped to 2033, as funding gaps, construction delays and ongoing political battles continue to threaten the project’s future.
Last year, the Trump administration pulled $4 million in federal funding from the rail effort. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy dismissed the project as “a ridiculous train to nowhere.”
With costs soaring and timelines stretching further into the future, the state Legislature is expected to hold hearings to investigate the project’s ballooning budget and persistent delays.
The project aims to connect San Francisco and Los Angeles in two hours and 40 minutes. With a top speed of 220 mph, California High‑Speed Rail trains would be the fastest in the U.S. and among the fastest in the world. Construction began in the Central Valley in 2015.

Am I the only one who remembers, during the early days of the pandemic lockdown, Gavin Newsom gave $1 billion of California money to China for personal protective equipment, and related supplies. The last I heard, the never got the supplies, and the money disappeared.
Sure, it doesn’t connect to anything. And it goes nowhere. But, hey. Let’s not quibble about details.
So sick of hearing about this catastrophe. Why has this not been audited by the IRS/GAO/OMB? Is there anything about california politics that isn’t a crooked scam? Who at the federal level is getting the kickbacks from california scam funding? Calgon take me away....
The cash ran dry the minute they proposed it… I was always supposed to be a cash grab and a boondoggle
Oh no! They are too close to stop now. Only a few trillion more dollars and they could finish it in our great-great-grandchildren’s lifetimes.
People wonder why voters become disillusioned with politics. But fiascos like this where no one is accountable for unimaginable waste, fraud, and abuse, make it impossible to take government seriously. No one is watching out for the excessive confiscatory taxes we pay.
By the way, the bridge in my post #7 cost $1 billion.
Not $1 million, but $1 billion.

What “Bullet train”? You mean the Bullet Bamboozle Boondoggle?
They mean keep the grift on schedule.
He’s a white male. That means he has no place in today’s Democratic Party.
Not one foot of track put down and they run out of loot? Sounds fishy...
= = =
But don’t they have a record amount of safe days without a train wreck?
It’s called “union make-work” and kickback to campaign funds. This all started when Ca politicians achieved their one-party State and knew they’d never investigate themselves. It’s above ground, in your face corruption. This grift has been going on for what? 19 years and counting?
C’mon, man! All they need is $110 Billion more and 15+ years and then...
Then a few $Billion more to actually by Hi-Speed engines and rail cars. Gavin needs his legacy.
hah! Excellent point lol
Who was it that said socialism always works until they run out of other people’s money?
