Article SummarySummary of the WSJ article (Aug. 5, 2026): “Who Is Michigan’s Abdul El-Sayed? Five Things to Know About the Progressive Democratic Senate Primary Winner”
Progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed defeated four-term Rep. Haley Stevens to win the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination in Michigan, according to the Associated Press. He will face Republican Mike Rogers in the general election.Key points about El-Sayed:
- Unabashedly progressive: He supports Medicare for All, free child care, and abolishing ICE. He has described Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide. He is not a member of the Democratic Socialists of America but has support from many in that orbit, including Bernie Sanders. He says he is not against capitalism if it has sufficient “guardrails.” His campaign mantra focuses on getting money out of politics, putting money in people’s pockets, and promoting Medicare for All.
- Michigan roots: The 41-year-old grew up in the Detroit area. He is Muslim; his parents emigrated from Egypt. He graduated from the University of Michigan (where he played lacrosse), earned a medical degree from Columbia, and a doctorate in public health from Oxford. He is a Rhodes Scholar. A former local public-health official, he has never held elected office. He lost the 2018 Democratic gubernatorial primary to Gretchen Whitmer by 22 points. If elected, he would be the first Muslim U.S. senator.
- Past calls to defund the police: After the 2020 killing of George Floyd, he supported defunding the police. He has since deleted related posts and now rejects the idea, favoring a more nuanced balance between policing and other services that can reduce crime.
- A doctor, but not a practicing physician: He previously referred to himself as a physician, but there is no public evidence he was a licensed medical doctor. His campaign bio notes he studied medicine but turned to politics, later rebuilding Detroit’s Health Department after bankruptcy and restructuring Wayne County’s health, human, and veterans services.
- Controversial associations: He has campaigned with online influencer Hasan Piker, a strong critic of Israel who has been accused of antisemitism by opponents. El-Sayed defends speaking to anyone with an audience he believes he can persuade and rejects cancel culture.

Money out of OUR pockets - into THEIR pockets....just like the Somalis have done.. There really is a fool born every minute and MI seems to have its share and they are not alone. What are people thinking - OR - is that the problem? They are not THINKING? Can we fence it off and keep them there - not to infect the rest of the country?

One more thing to know:
A recent survey – not that such things have proved particularly accurate in Michigan – showed El-Sayed losing to Republican Mike Rogers in midterms by 10 points. The same poll found that Stevens would have beaten Rogers by a slim margin. Independent voters favored Rogers over El-Sayed by more than 27 points.
The Democratic party needs a net gain of four seats this fall to take the upper chamber. If El-Sayed falls short, he might inadvertently end up turning out to be Trump’s secret weapon.

A Rhodes scholar who cites economist Adam Smith in making his case about the need for more regulation and taxation, El-Sayed would be the first muslim senator if elected this fall. .....
Oh boy! Despite his great academic record, he’s a muslim and a “Noo” Socialist! Watch out, Michigan!

Open a mosque and preach a variety of Islam that teaches non-radicalized followers like El-Sayed are apostates and encourage true believers to purify the faith.
