Ukraine allowed Russian gas to be piped across their country, which aided the Russian war against them. This was so that the countries buying the gas would have time to transition to other sources. For the most part they did nothing as the Russian gas was cheaper...kept so for political reasons. When the contract ran out, Ukraine cut the pipe. This is what they told everyone they would do. Ukraine has been extraordinarily helpful at great cost to themselves. The problem with the Kazak pipeline exports is if Ukraine allows them, the Russians will piggyback on that and ship their own stuff. Ukraine has found a pressure point that could collapse the Russian war effort. Who can blame them for pressing it as hard as they can?
On the other hand, if all American support to Ukraine is cut then the Europeans will be forced to make up for it. While this is a good thing for all parties, the Europeans don’t have the necessary production capacity. They’re trying to build capacity rather than buy from, say, Korea. “Hey, we want to keep this money in our economy.” The Europeans have some hard choices to make.
