An F-35B aircraft crashed at Miramar Air Base in San Diego Friday morning, sending up a plume of black smoke.
Emergency crews have responded to the area, which occurred on the base’s flight line around 10 a.m. Friday, a military official told The California Post. The F-35 was assigned to 3rd Marine Air Wing, Marine Air Group 11.
The military classified it as a “Class A mishap,” which means the incident resulted in death, permanent disability, aircraft loss, or equipment damage of $2.5 million or more, according to Fox 5 San Diego.
The official said the aircraft had a pilot, but his condition is unknown. He ejected from the aircraft’s cockpit and was recovered and taken to a medical facility with non-life-threatening injuries and is reportedly in stable condition, officials said.
A woman said her coworker witnessed the crash and saw the jet appear to be coming in very low as it prepared for landing, and missed the runway, according to Fox 11. The pilot then ejected, she said.
A fireball came out of the plane as he did so, and the jet struck the ground with its tail low and nose tilted upward.

The U.S. Marine Corps plans to acquire a total of 420 F‑35s as its official program of record.
This breaks down into: 280 F‑35B (STOVL) and 140 F‑35C (carrier variant).
The U.S. Navy currently has 56 F‑35Cs in service, based on 2026 inventory data from GlobalMilitary.net’s fleet reporting. The U.S. Navy plans to acquire 273 F‑35Cs as its official program‑of‑record total.
The U.S. Air Force’s F‑35 inventory is the largest of any service, and the most recent 2026 program data shows the USAF has 500 F‑35As. They are planned to acquire a fleet of 1,763 F‑35As as its official program of record.

All that from a second hand eyewitness account of “missing” the runway. I think I’ll wait until the accident report comes out.

You’re right. All now is mere speculation.
I saw that several times in the USAF. A pilot doing “touch and go” training, then suddenly a puff of smoke at the far end of the runway and fire trucks speeding to the site.
Some times minor damage, sometimes major damage such as when the B-52 loaded with bombs crashed at the end of the runway and blew up in 1969 Thailand.
