A spate of rulings from the Supreme Court couldn’t be more of a mandate if they were handed down, gift-wrapped, and sealed with a kiss by God: The mass deportation of illegal aliens is legal and imperative if there’s any hope of saving this country.
One ruling declared it within the president’s authority to interpret the word “temporary” as the opposite of “permanent” with regard to migrants who have been permitted to live within the U.S. for what is understood to be a finite period. He can order their removal. (Good!) A separate ruling, on the other hand, affirmed automatic American citizenship to babies born to migrants who have illegally entered the country. (Bad!) Yet a third ruling deemed it legal for states to count voter ballots that arrive after Election Day, thus rendering the whole concept of “Election Day” void. (Very bad!)
Taken together, if the president has expansive authority to remove illegal aliens, who otherwise might just pop out a baby immediately deemed “American” (a new Democrat

Detention Centers are stupid tactics.
Trying to score a touchdown on every play is stupid tactics.

History:
Nixon centralized immigration enforcement in the INS.
Prior to Nixon Chicago (and many states, cities, counties) had local law enforcement enforce immigration.
In 1960s Chicago if the police picked up an undesireable Hispanic with no US id, no Visa, they would put him on the weekly Train car or Bus to Mexico. (Early 60s a train car. Later 60s an old former Greyhound.) The system was not perfect. Some Puerto Ricans who were US citizens were shipped to Mexico along with the other non-Mexicans.
Most undesireables were Drunk n Disorderly picked up in stupid bar fights. Some were Drunk n Disorderly in apartment buildings. Burglars, Drug offenders were not as many. Chicago saw it cheaper to ship them to Mexico than to hold them in Cook County Jail until an expensive court appearance, inclulding paying for the lawyer for the defense.
I assisted/was an informant in some of those “removals”.
Since the bus was weekly sometimes the holding cell was the local police station, sometimes Cook County Jail. But often the detainees just sat in the bus in the garage barn, especially if it was already the weekend and the bus would leave after the Sunday night pickups.
The buses I was aware of were Chicago Police buses. Often suburban police, county sheriff or state police would send an undesireable to be deported.
“Legal Aid” was different back then. But there were still, even back then, “bleeding heart” lawyers. I associated with them in the Alinsky NCO. They did not take deportation cases. One reason for that was that the “drunk n disorderly” were truly undesireable and the population that supported the bleeding heart lawyers did not support these undesireables.
The other reason was that when an immigrant had no visa or other justification to be in Chicago, the lawyer would have an unwinnable case in court. (Note that the Chicago Democrat Political machine of Mayo Daley controlled ALL personnel in the court from judge to clerk to bailiff to police officers called to testify.)
The system was not perfect. But it was better than the alternatives. And nobody was complaining. I was active in building the anti-Daley coalition. The practice was not an issue with anyone.
Nixon ended that. Mayor Daley (a Nixon supporter in 1972) fought Nixon on that in the courts and lost.
