Iran doubles down on control of Strait of Hormuz after weekend of violence — as shipping traffic plummets

Iran doubled down on its control of the Strait of Hormuz Sunday — declaring on state-run TV that all ships must get permission from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps before sailing through the critical choke point.

The announcement followed Iranian attacks on two ships that were transiting the strait in recent days — prompting strikes by the US, and tit-for-tat retaliation by the Islamic republic.

The violence threatened to unravel the delicate peace deal less than a week after the two sides met in Switzerland for talks on a permanent agreement. President Trump accused Iran of violating the cease-fire and warned the US could return to all-out war.

The attacks also resulted in shipping traffic through Hormuz, which once carried 20% of the world’s oil, to drop to pre-peace deal levels.

Just 10 ships crossed on Saturday, compared with 40 to 50 earlier in the week.

The IRGC has maintained that Iran will keep full control over the Strait of Hormuz. On Thursday it fired a drone on a Singapore-flagged cargo ship along the coast of Oman — after the vessel apparently used a route through the strait that avoided Iranian controlled waters.

Iran claimed the vessel, the container ship Ever Lovely, was using military escorts in the Oman-half of the strait, and that it undermined the Islamic republic’s control over the passageway.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Sunday that Iran will exercise sole management of the Strait of Hormuz for the next 30 days before allowing full traffic to resume.

“Any attempt to adopt new or separate arrangements compared to what is underway by the Islamic Republic of Iran, will only lead to more complicated situations and delays in the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and will increase the tensions, as we witnessed in the...”

Trump and allies should set up a program where the Strait must remain open and the cost of ANY AND ALL damages inflicted upon shipping by Iran will be 100% covered by IRANIAN IMPOUNDED FUNDS. This would stiffen the spines of the shipping insurers and reinsurers. And IRANIANS UNDERSTAND MONEY, do not want to lose it and will punish (i.e., kill) those who cause the loss.

I’m posting this in every thread where the absence of such MONETARY DAMAGES ASSESSMENT is partially responsible for the situation

Iran’s thug leadership has a Lion attitude (and “rap”).

In all other ways, including it’s ability to “reach out and touch” actual commercial vessels/tankers in the Hormuz Strait, it is proving distinctly Mouse-Like.

It doesn’t necessarily bode well for the Mullahs or the IRGC in the near or medium term if they can’t back up their current big boy threats with big boy military attacks.

I thought the US military had taken control 🤔

It's an asymmetric war with a decentralized asymmetric combatant spread out of 350,000 square miles of mountain fortress.

Good luck "taking control."

For a second I thought you were going to finish with “of the traitor filled Dem Party.”

Dems do have raw knuckles, though.

They don’t have a centralize command structure.

More like layer-upon-layer of crazier-and-crazier.

Good point.

If Iranian factions observed the US they would say “That Rand Paul is going to stop the war”, “AOC and Bernie are running America behind the scenes” and “When their universities and news media are fully taken over the government will be overthrown.”

When we look at Iran it doesn’t matter if one of the factions makes a deal so long as the other factions say “no.”

Time to quit talking to these lying Muzzie bastards, open up with all barrels, and end this regime and their terrorist manipulation of the Strait of Hormuz. If it takes boots on the ground, so be it.

This is why if Trump was going to start a war with Iran, he should’ve sent in ground troops and finished it. If the Iraq war would’ve been justified if we found chemical weapons.-how much more justified would a war with Iran be if even the United Nations says they’re pursuing nuclear weapon weapons. The world is going to plunge into economic chaos if that government isn’t taken out.
