The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the Trump administration can turn away migrants who show up at the US-Mexico border before they apply for asylum, in a victory for the White House’s immigration crackdown that prompted a tense exchange between two justices.
The high court ruled 6-3 in favor of a policy known as “metering,” in use during President Trump’s first term as well as Barack Obama’s administration, which capped the number of people who could apply for asylum each day.
Immigration advocates had claimed that aliens should be considered to “arrive” in the US once they reached the border and argued the policy violated federal law stating that migrants can apply for asylum upon entry, regardless of whether they did so legally or illegally.
Conservative Justice Samuel Alito disagreed, writing in the majority opinion: “In ordinary speech, no one would say that a person ‘arrives in’ a place—for example, a house, a city, or a country—before the person enters that place.
“The context in which the phrase ‘arrives in the United States’ is used in the immigration statutes at issue here supports an ordinary-meaning reading.”
The administration had argued that the policy was necessary to deal with a massive influx of migrants at the southern border, adding that people who were initially turned away could always come back and attempt to apply later.
To qualify for asylum, migrants must show a fear of persecution in their homeland for specific reasons, like race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion.
Once granted asylum, migrants are protected from deportation and can legally work, bring in immediate family, apply for legal residency and seek citizenship.

Non-Mexicans certainly should not be able to claim asylum in the US because they clearly already have asylum. In Mexico.

Exactly. All the immigration treaties say people applying for asylum have to stop at THE FIRST SAFE COUNTRY. ie they do not get to shop for whatever country they want to enter. Everybody knows these are just economic migrants.

The government senior leadership was FILLED with inept political hacks who had one simple agenda, usually related to their sexual fetish or race: Sam Britton, Eric Holder, Eric Fanning, Rachel Leland... Some of these people literally lacked any experience nor had zero formal training in the area they were now in charge of. You had wives of service members (spouse's) who had more defense related training and experience than an Eric Fanning, and that's no joke!

You can apply for asylum only if you are persecuted, afraid for your life, etc.

Outstanding!!! Finally! Lets get these useless Haitians out of Charleroi,PA. They run stop signs and red lights,always drive the wrong way down one way streets,they park their new SUVs with tinted windows in other folks driveways,pile their trash up on the front porches,they never mow their lawns,the Haitian kids are stealing bikes like crazy and then ride them all over town.My property school tax went up last year because of Haitian students, Local cops don’t seem to care at all. They are buying up store fronts downtown and opening restaurants and food stores,one was closed down for health violations. Where are they getting all this money from?

That should be changed to only if the person can show reasonable proof he or his immediate family is in fear of torture, imprisonment, and/or death due to his race, religion, or ethnicity. Otherwise scrap the program as the options cited allow for too much abuse.
Wrong, this is not about one President. The Supreme Court has been good to the Constitution.
That is 98% of the world right now, including, perhaps, the United States.
