King County didn’t just lose residents. It lost billions of dollars in income.
Newly analyzed IRS migration data shows more than 68,000 tax filers left King County in 2023, taking approximately $2.19 billion in adjusted gross income (AGI) with them, according to reporting by the Puget Sound Business Journal.
The findings raise new questions about the long-term health of the region’s tax base as Seattle-area leaders continue expanding public spending while businesses, jobs, and higher-income residents increasingly look elsewhere.
According to the Business Journal’s review of IRS county-to-county migration records, nearly one-third of departing King County tax filers relocated to neighboring Pierce and Snohomish counties, where housing costs are significantly lower. While local officials often focus on overall population totals, economists note that migration data tells a different story: not all residents contribute equally to the tax base.
The IRS Statistics of Income migration database tracks address changes on federal tax returns and measures the amount of income moving across county lines. The latest figures suggest King County may be exchanging higher-income taxpayers for lower-income newcomers, a shift that could have significant implications for local government revenues, consumer spending, housing markets, and public services.

that’s a shame
hopefully NYChitty is not far behind...
It turns out that electing communists has consequences. Who would have guessed?
The issue is the eventually vote for the same crap they just left. Look at NJ...that was were NYC people would flee to...now it’s just as left as NYC.
I would love for Boeing to leave the Seattle area if for no other reason than to see elite left leadership get up on their hind legs and lecture about the importance of manufacturing and national defense.
Such an impressive place. Heartbreakingly beautiful. 2.7 Million people. 33 incorporated cities. Tons of resources. And it comes to this. The reaction? In the immortal words of Her Honor the mayor of the largest city, “Well, bye.”
The Curley Effect
Drive out all the productive people, leaving only the losers behind, that ensures Democrats will win every election.
You are probably right about Seattle politicians, but it doesn’t always work out that way.
In the 1990s the Army was consolidating commands under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process. I saw and heard about this from two sides.
The Missile Command in Huntsville AL devoted people to managing BRAC. When politicians came to town, they were greeted at the airport by the Commanding General and Mayor. Realtors assured them that housing was available and that the city was a great place to retire. Facilities managers assured them that there was plenty of room on the arsenal for new buildings. They received as good a dog and pony show as was possible in the time allotted.
I later talked to a woman who worked for the Aviation Command in St. Louis. She had a small office with no additional help, even for surge events like the arrival of politicians. She told me that St. Louis politicians did not care where the Army consolidated or closed facilities.
You can guess which city gained and which lost employment.
Another DEI success story?
From the frying pan into another frying pan. SMDH
Insightful.
Apparently Texas and others are struggling to keep freedom alive with the infestations of leftists and slack jawed woke types arriving. The thought of that idiot “Beto” and now the new one having more than 1% of the vote is chilling.
Seattle needed to impose exit taxes.
Very misleading. $2.19B in taxable income isn’t $2.19B in income for the county.
No surprise. I assume most of these people are still Democrats. Just stay out of my county.
Gee, ya think??

When you jump up in the air and rejoice at their leaving the other people who did not believe you will start to do so.
The avalanche has started.
Enjoy the trip.
$2.19 billion divided by 68,000 = $32,200
That means most of those tax filers were middle or lower middle class.
The current median price paid for a home in King County is $1 million.
The current minimum wage (all jobs) in Seattle is $21.30 per hour.
I have been blessed with perfect health, but closing fast on age 80.
When the medical bills start showing up, I will have to move to Mississippi or West Virginia.
Democrats have no qualms about ruling over the ruins, as long as they are ruling.
