Iran has reportedly begun dumping oil into the Persian Gulf after running out of storage capacity for excess crude. Images allegedly showing oil residue in the waters around Kharg Island began circulating around 10 days ago, with more continuing to emerge as time has gone on.
Some reports warn that the situation is rapidly becoming an environmental disaster, as Iran’s coastline has reportedly become heavily coated in oil, which is now said to be spreading to the shores of neighboring countries, including Kuwait.

Better be careful about the sources of the reporting here. Obviously Iran is expected to deny it, and that should be suspect, but this needs to be so big it is undeniable before drawing the conclusion that they’re out of capacity, can’t process or sell enough, and are dumping to save their wells.

There’s some truth there but it can be somewhat mitigated and minimized.
Iran has a domestic population of over 90 million people with many domestic vehicles requiring petroleum derived products. The Iranians managing the oil fields can choose which wells and fields are cut off or have production lowered so that permanent damage can be minimized.
Proper fertilization is key.

The USA has oil reserves underground in salt mines, or so I have heard. Why can't Iran transport excess oil to mountain lake beds or underground caverns (like the ones they built for nuclear development)? Very short-sighted of them to dirty up the ocean.
