As Trump Rift Grows, Who Does Ukraine Turn to for Support Against Russia?
Newsweek ^ | May 10, 2026 | Peter Aitken

Following a yearlong deterioration of relations with the United States, Ukraine is considering its options for material assistance as Russia's war continues and the possibility of a peace deal remains remote.

"When [President Donald] Trump was elected, many in Kyiv were hopeful he'd bring a welcome change," John Hardie, the deputy director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) Russia Program, told Newsweek. "Now, the Ukrainians deal with Washington because they can't afford not to. The frustration is palpable."

Former acting Under Secretary of Defense for Policy James Anderson, who worked in the first Trump administration, told Newsweek the U.S. and Ukraine continue to work closely—mainly through intelligence sharing and other non-kinetic or non-material means.

"I don't think necessarily Ukraine's relationship with the United States is beyond repair, but obviously it's strained presently and likely will remain stressed for some time to come," Anderson said, adding Trump "is not keen on providing Ukraine direct military support, other than intelligence."

Russians should realize helping Iranian thugs is likely to have nasty consequences.

Everything would change instantly, if Zelenski would wear a snappy business suit and tie. 47 has an inherent dislike of people from other countries that wear funny clothes. Its about respecting him, not mutual respect.

Narendra Modi of India is another leader that does not show respect to 47 by wearing a business suit, but only to his country by wearing Indian clothes, which is not good.

Most of the European members of NaTO are their active supporters. With all that military might and industrial productivity behind them, why should they care about losing US support?

The EU has approved $108B to support Ukraine for a couple of years.

However, that money has not yet been allocated by any country.

Who cares?

I humbly submit that I care. The Europeans seem to be stepping up. Maybe Canada will, too, since they are becoming ever more bestie with Europe.

Godspeed, Ukraine.

Ukraine was quick to offer drones and key instructions on how to use them and defend against them. That should count for something. They also have a serious bone to pick with Iran for all their Russian support.

"When [President Donald] Trump was elected, many in Kyiv were hopeful he'd bring a welcome change,"

Why would they think that after using their agent Vindman to get Trump impeached?

Easy answer: the Europeans who claim that Russia is their enemy. Maybe Steyer and his fellow American leftist billionaires can also contribute.

Trump's hyperinflated ego will not be pleased when it reads how history characterizes his treatment of Ukraine.

Given that history over the last 60 years has largely been written by Leftists and fed into the public school curriculums to indoctrinate youngsters and gullible adults who never questioned the generated “authoritative” historical narratives, he should not expect anything different.

The GDP of Texas is bigger than that of Russia. If Europe cannot help defend Ukraine from Europe’s biggest threat, then why should we care.

GDP of Texas is $2.904 Trillion in 2025.
GDP of Russia is $2.66 Trillion in 2026.

The GDP of Texas is bigger than that of Russia.

Misleading.

GDP (PPP) is more accurate.
