A liberal group is looking to counter the influence of conservative Turning Point USA on college campuses by launching its own club that invites students to fight back against “authoritarianism” and “corporate greed.”
More Perfect University (MPUniversity), founded by the liberal media group “More Perfect Union,” made its big launch on Monday, saying students in all 50 states joined MPUniversity in the six days leading up to it.
The launch featured a livestream and interview with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), whose advisors founded More Perfect Union.
“Mainstream media, politicians, and universities are bowing down to the 1%. We’re organizing on college campuses to fight corporate greed and build student power,” MPUniversity said in a post on X.
The group will do on-campus events and debates while creating an online community through discord and email. It will train students on online advocacy, including videos and podcasts.
“Young Americans are among those most threatened by AI, climate change, and an economic and political system dominated by billionaires. That is why, now more than ever, it is critical for young people to organize and get involved in the political process,” Sanders said in a post on X.
More Perfect Union says it reaches around 50 million people a month, according to The Washington Post, and that 1 in 10 of those who watch its YouTube channel are under the age of 25.
MPUnviersity has a big task ahead as Turning Point USA has chapters on more 800 campuses and said it saw a surge in interest last year after its founder, Charlie Kirk, was assassinated during a campus event. The conservative group officially began in 2012.
