Pretty sure I remember this same headline when I was in college - 35 years ago. Not that it isn’t a problem, but it’s been a problem for a long time. Antibiotic resistance has “always” been around (bacteria recovered from dead antarctic explorers from almost 200 years ago had some resistant strains). It doesn’t spread because the resistance is typically caused by crippling some legit cellular pathways that the antibiotic uses to gain entrance, or blocks to destroy the cell. The resistant strain has degraded function but survives in the presence of the antibiotic. But apart from the antibiotic it is a cripple so natural selection does not favor it.

One reason the queer population has made themselves the perfect Petri dishes for these pathogens to mutate in is that they feel bullet-proof with the advent of PrEP for HIV prevention. They just assume that they'll be safe from everything else as well, even though it's made clear that bacteria aren't affected by PrEP.

The gram negative diplococci was easy to diagnose on a simple gram stain. The porcelain under the fingernail disease also had some tell tale signs. There were several strains from SE Asia that were antibiotic resistant in the early 70’s. As a vet tech I could diagnose and treat this without the patient getting it logged in on their medical records. Not only did we have to find out who their contacts were, we knew all of the WAFs that were infected also. It grew well on chocolate agar.
