A King County jury has found the City of Seattle negligent and liable for the 2020 death of 16-year-old Antonio Mays Jr., who was fatally shot in the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ), also known as the Capitol Hill Organized Protest (CHOP). The verdict, delivered three-plus weeks after a month-long trial at the King County Courthouse presided over by Judge O'Donnell, stems from a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the Mays Estate accusing the city of negligence in its handling of the zone, which protesters occupied for three weeks amid nationwide unrest following George Floyd's death.
The jury's ruling holds the city accountable for creating a "state-created danger" by abandoning the Seattle Police East Precinct, installing barricades that fortified the zone, and prohibiting police and emergency responders from entering the area, which plaintiffs argued enabled unchecked violence and delayed life-saving aid to Mays Jr. Jurors were required to determine whether the City was negligent in its response to the incident, and if so, whether such negligence contributed to Mays' death.

The naughtee nurse’s family may get a payout.
How could the city be negligent went they were unable to properly function during that time, due to CHOP hoodlums?
They should appeal this if possible. Take it away from the pubic and give it to a Judge to decide the payout.
I don’t know how legal that would be, but $30 Million is over the top. These idiot jurists think they are ‘Stickin’ it to The Man’ when all they’re doing is putting a heavy burden on taxpayers and consumers.
So, if I’m part of a group that violates the law, then I can sue those not responsible, if I get hurt? Makes sense - right?
Not gonna lie, Antifa executing teenage black carjackers during the Summer of George Floyd was kinda based.
โ How could the city be negligent went they were unable to properly function during that time, due to CHOP hoodlums?โ
The city runs the police department and ordered them not to interfere. This led, at least according to the jury, an entirely preventable death. The real pity is that the judgement canโt be taken out of the Mayorโs hide.
L
Nothing must stop and the police from going in and rounding these people up. They chose not to.
Exactly. The city chose to abandon a police precinct to try to keep the peace and basically let a group of unknown people take total control over a section of their city. They are 100% liable for that decision. I wish you could come directly out of the pockets of the people who permitted that decision, but sadly, the voters and taxpayers of Seattle will be on the hook.
The voters and taxpayers of Seattle elected the clowns responsible and likely mostly agreed with what they did. They should pay.
Seriously ?!?!!
Seattle authorized CHOP..
I see. The police were ordered to ‘stand down’.
There is the liability, to whoever issued that order.
But $30.Million? I’m guessing the lawyer of the dead boy’s family must have concocted that sum.
The people of Seattle totally deserve this. The government they elected and still support stupidly increased the risk to the public. For another example, the people of Uvalde elected a corrupt city government and school board which created a separate school district police department. Have you ever heard of a city school district having its own police department? That was all about patronage jobs!
For cowardly and incompetent police officers who wouldn't engage a nut who was killing their children, and blocked other police officers from acting. The people of Uvalde killed their own children.
What comes around goes around.
Pay up, Seattle taxpayers. Don’t expect any Federal funding to cover it.
I don’t see it that way at all.
The city just abandoned that space and a lot of crimes took place. My son had just moved to Seattle and was looking for an apartment at that time and I was biting nails for a couple of weeks, hoping and praying that he’d never go near that area. He assurred me he wouldn’t but who knew when the whole lawless city might erupt?
City could have called up extra cops, asked for state and national help. Bums run Seattle. In fact, my daughter, who lived in far northern Idaho, had to fly to Seattle to get her passport in Seattle because she made decision to travel too late to get it by mail. Also had to take a cab from airport to passport office because horrible street people were drinking and drugging right outside the Federal building and cab didn’t help much. . She had to step over them to get in. THEN, they refused to give her her passport though she had an old one to show them plus photo driver’s license for ID. They told her she’d have to come back to pick it up in a week.
She called the office of our DEM senator who thankfully intervened and the passport was sent to her.
Point is, people who don’t live near Dem HELLHOLE cities don’t believe or understand how truly evil their governing bodies are. If anything had happened to one of my kids, you bethcha we’d sue that liiberal hellhole.
God did not destroy Sodom and Gomorrah because they had bad mayors.
It is arguable that 'unable' is a misnomer, that the events we witnessed were framed by choices of leftist city leaders.
I bet that the jury had biting insight to that reality.
Besides: Leftists elected said leaders, so they can pay the damages.
Am I wrong for laughing anot tos? S hole democrat controlled city and a s hole democrat dies in a s hole allowed CHAZ zone, I find it very numerous.
I’m guessing his family takes no responsibility for letting a 16 year old boy run amok through this uncontrolled zone in the middle of the night doing God knows what.
The city allowed people to take over a section of the city and run basically everyone out. The city has an obligation to provide city services such as emergency services. They should have use the police to take back the area, control the area and provide emergency services. Thatโs my opinion of why the jury ruled the way they did.
