COPENHAGEN, Sept 12 (Reuters) - Denmark plans to buy European-made air defence systems for 58 billion Danish crowns ($9.11 billion), its largest arms purchase ever, the country's defence minister said on Friday, citing a challenging security situation.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in February ordered the military to "buy buy buy" equipment in preparation for potential future Russian aggression in Europe.
Denmark plans to procure eight systems, including the long-range SAMP/T platform produced by Eurosam, a consortium of MBDA France, MBDA Italy and Thales, as well as medium-range systems manufactured by Norway, Germany or France.
"There is no doubt that the security situation is challenged," Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen told reporters on Friday.
"We have seen how Russia has violated Polish airspace with several drones... It is a reminder to all of us about the importance of strengthening our combat power," he added.
Poland shot down suspected Russian drones in its airspace on Wednesday with the backing of aircraft from its NATO allies, the first time a member of the Western military alliance is known to have fired shots during Russia's war in Ukraine.
The European systems can be delivered faster and cheaper than the U.S. Patriot missile defence system, head of the Danish defence acquisition and logistics organisation, Per Pugholm Olsen, told a press conference.

Any such guarantee has long since passed its shelf life in Denmark-and, sadly, for much of Western Europe.
It’s not the job of the US to defend the totalitarian and Muslim countries of the EUSSR.
We owe them nothing.
Yeah…. Because the air raids on Copenhagen are in the verge of starting. Nothing 9 billion to Raytheon can’t fix!
Its silly to treat Denmark like a stand alone country. There are counties in anew Mexico about their size.
Google says they spend US$7.8 billion equivalent annually on their national defense. So spending 9 billion in one shot on air defense shows that they see Russia as a SIGNIFICANT threat.
Or there’s something hinky going on.
I’m opting for that explanation.
Its all about the money.....and creating a fake Russian threat to dragoon the peasants back into line...and build out their own US independent Mil-Ind complex.

Now of whom have any actual wartime experience intercepting ANYTHING!
If you want proven, cutting edge tech...buy from the Israelis or the Americans who supply them!

Meanwhile, the world knows that Russia has no effective air defense systems. The evidence in Iran and Syria and even mother Russia her self is that the expensive Russian systems sold aren’t really any good.
Russia has met defeat in Ukraine and has only one effective counter measure. Send large numbers of drones and missiles to attack defenseless civilian targets to achieve maximum visibility. Since the sources of these weapons have been destroyed, when existing supplies are used, Russia ia defenseless
