The DOD could have saved billions and not given it up.

A lot of sailors have fond memories of Subic Bay and Olongapo. Not me. I always had work to do, and stayed on the ship...

The DOD could have saved billions and not given it up. When the host country tells you to get out, it's generally not a good idea to stick around.

Olongapo had the highest concentration of bars of any place I’ve ever been.

Your post reminds me of a scene from MASH. Henry Blake was looking at a specimen under the microscope and he said to Radar...”Radar,you'd better tell the cook to take a couple of days off”. Radar responds “he's got the flu again?” Blake says...”yah,the flu”.

IMHO I don’t blame the Philippines for kicking us out of Subic.
The drinking and whoring were destroying their society. Sodom.

When Marines in my company came down with post-R&R conditions, we Docs would ask them where they went on R&R.
The reason for that was because we were so skilled at treating the clap that we gave them the best antibiotic for their particular strain.
Penicillin worked on the Hong Kong Dong but was no match for the Bangkok clap. Aureomycin worked on that.
