In maps: The territory Ukraine could be told to surrender in a 'land for peace' deal

Any agreement between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin following their historic summit could leave Ukraine in an impossible position after three years of brutal, grinding war for survival.

While no deal was struck when they met in Alaska on Friday, the two leaders are believed to have discussed the possibility of Ukraine giving up territory in exchange for an end to the fighting.

That would effectively be an annexation of sovereign Ukrainian territory by Russia by force.

Russia currently occupies around 19% of Ukraine, including Crimea and the parts of the Donbas region it seized prior to the full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Going into the summit, Mr Trump said he hoped to get "prime territory" back for Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Mr Putin wants the rest of Donetsk - and in effect the entire eastern Donbas region - as part of a ceasefire plan.

But the Ukrainian leader said Kyiv would reject the proposal and explained that such a move would deprive them of defensive lines and open the way for Moscow to conduct further offensives.

Vlad isn’t budging, ever. He will keep his ethnic Russian provinces. War cheerleaders, deal with it and move on.

It isn’t surrendered land. It’s ethnically Russian with voters choosing to become part of Russia two years ago. It was also the target of Kiev artillery for years prior to the SMO. Stick that in your Zelensky and smoke it.

Valid case for Crimea, perhaps.

But for the Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine, they happened to speak Russian due to being a part of the Soviet Union. Zelensky's first language is Russian and he didn't really start to speak Ukrainian until he was elected as President in 2019.

In 2014 important gas and oil reserves were discovered in Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk. Curious that Putler then seized them.

Further, the durak (fool) Putler ignored the advice of Alexander Solzhenitzyn (raised in Ukraine) to have a peaceful accomodation with Ukraine for access to Crimean naval facilities and pipelines running through Ukraine (see his book “Kak Mii Obostroim Rossioo” (Rebuilding Russia) for details.

Which is only Crimea. He should give up the rest.

It isn’t surrendered land. It’s ethnically Russian with voters choosing to become part of Russia two years ago.

This lie again. Only Crimea has an ethnic Russian majority. The other four provinces have Ukrainian majorities. Nor are those so-called referenda worth the paper they were written on. It would be like trusting the DNC to run the national election.

It was also the target of Kiev artillery for years prior to the SMO.

Another Russian lie. Ukraine was not targeting ethnic Russian civilians. But that does not stop the lie from being repeated.

One potential problem for Russia is that, if it does take all of the four oblasts, then it will have control of areas that are not predominantly Russian. They could be looking long-term at unrest and possible insurgencies. Taking control of non-Russian areas might be more of a headache than they are thinking.

So, are you in favor of Russia controlling non-Russian provinces in Ukraine?

Ukraine was not targeting ethnic Russian civilians.

That is what is a lie.

Ukraine absolutely passed laws mandating the Ukrainian language be taught in public schools and be required on governmental forms despite the fact that the majority in the annexed areas spoke Russian.

There are plenty of videos of civilians in Donetsk that say there targeted by the Ukrainian government for refusing to accept the illegal coup in 2014, which resulted in a President the vast majority of the population being illegally removed from office.

You think if you tell a lie longer enough, it will believed.

It isn’t surrendered land.

It's not surrendered and it wont be surrendered.

It’s ethnically Russian with voters choosing to become part of Russia two years ago.

Hogwash! Who that wants to continue living would vote against the wishes of he who holds a gun to your head?

And, ethnically Russian has no meaning, not when the country was occupied by the Soviets for decades and forced the Ukrainians to adopt the Russian language and Russian culture. Lots of American territories across the south, are ethnically Mexican. If Mexico wanted 'their' land back, should the U.S. comply?

It was also the target of Kiev artillery for years prior to the SMO.

Russia was always present in those areas, instigating revolt. Bombing the hell out of those Russians was the appropriate thing to do.

Stick that in your Putin and smoke it. That makes no sense, but it's just as senseless as your entire post.

Sell it to Putin for $400 billion

Since Russia is one of the poorest countries in the world, Putin would insist on getting the sale financed at #1.00 per year for 400 billion years.

Is it a bad day for you Zelenskyites?

Stick this in adorno

Sounds like Zelensky and European leaders are ready to end the war!

Zelensky will come to Washington Monday, and then Trump will schedule the final summit between Putin and Zelensky.
