Remember Gavin Newsom’s first visit to the sites of devastating fires last January in Los Angeles, when he vowed to streamline California’s paralytic regulations so people could quickly rebuild their homes?
In that interview, while undulating his shoulders in a weird shimmy that will undoubtedly come back to haunt him as he ramps up his presidential campaigning, Newsom also promised to “prevent opportunistic investors from exploiting vulnerable residents by offering below-market prices.”
It’s hard to say which promise has been more thoroughly violated. As celebrity author Adam Carolla posted on 7/14, there is virtually no work going on along the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, where hundreds of homes burned down to the sand. This is typical.
The Palisades Fire, with a burn area that included Malibu, destroyed over 6,000 homes. So far, 161 permits have been issued by the City of Los Angeles.....

This isn’t speculation. In late June, Los Angeles County’s “Blue Ribbon Commission on Climate Action and Fire-Safe Recovery” issued its “draft action plan” for “The Resilient and Sustainable Rebuilding of Los Angeles County.” This document is a textbook example of what corporate socialist elites have in store for those normal citizens who, to date, still maintain a modicum of financial independence.
In this document, the first thing the commission does is propose a new bureaucracy, the “Resilient Rebuilding Authority,” empowered to levy taxes and fees to purchase properties and consolidate the reconstruction costs, then giving the exiled homeowners the right of first refusal to purchase the homes they build. They want to “work with selected builders” to source and build “homes with resilient standards.” They want the authority to “manage logistics for rebuilding,” including transportation for workers, materials sourcing and delivery, and “sequencing” of the rebuilding process. ...

Saw that coming!
They place many extra layers of people to be paid upon processes that were already there and wind up with no building occurring and only their Democrat friends being allowed to be sources for rebuilding. This process is stretched out to near infinity, to exasperate former home owners such that they sell their property off to Democrat apartment builders, instead.
It’s like the movie “Brazil,” brought to life, as only liberals can do.
So this is going to be the construction of a “low cost housing” zone, built from scratch. By the same government that’s in charge of the train to nowhere. Great.
They’ll be turning it over to the Mexican colonists. Mexico’s first state in America.
Carolla saw how bad it was going to be.
For this, I remember Christ’s words, “What you do for the least, you do for Me.
Basically, in principle, is a statement of empathy. It is because the rich didnt protect the poor from government abuse, the rich didnt have protection from government abuse.
Needed: apply the US Constitution’s 5th Amendment protection against this uncompensated regulatory taking of property.
The old story was about the Emperor Nero burning Rome so that he could engage in some urban redevelopment. But that story has now been updated, and the new emperor has better hair.
The people of CA vote for this stuff, and when it bites them in the tush, they vote for more of it. I’m a little bitter because CA exports it’s stupid to the rest of the country.
I saw this coming because all you have to do is take a Leftists words and invert them and the truth is revealed.
Californians like this kind of Government. If they didn’t they would change.
They voted for it
Stevie Wonder saw it coming.
These quasi government agencies will eventually own the land as individual home owners will be hamstrung by government regulations and red tape and be unable to rebuild their single family homes. LA will then fill these lots with shoddy multi family homes built at great cost enriching unions and Democrat cronies. These multi family homes will be virtually given to the homeless, minorities and the illegals in the name of social justice quickly replicating the all the other failed government housing projects that simply created slums. I expect that many of the people who lost their homes in these fires will cut their losses abandon their properties and leave California .
If I was going to sell my burned out property, I’d add a condition that it be replaced with the same type of building, i.e., single family, double....to stop the public housing and other land grabs.
Developers and “unusually wealthy” politicians are waiting out the property owners, expecting to buy up the properties at “fire-sale prices” (a reasonable expectation — it not a certainty — given the level of corruption in LA and California politics run completely by the Democrat/Communist Party).
