Inside the campaign to find a new Republican to run against Mamdani — and why it could be Mayor Adams
New York Post ^ | June 26, 2025 | Lydia Moynihan

Prominent donors are gunning to get Republican mayoral nominee Curtis Sliwa a job in the Trump Administration in hopes of pushing him out of New York City’s mayoral race ... The aim is to open up the GOP nomination — and the nearly 30% of the vote someone running in that lane is expected to get — for current mayor Eric Adams...

My sources said Adams, who recently struck a deal with the Trump Administration to clear himself of charges leveled by the DOJ, is open to running as a Republican, but it hinges on a rather complicated chain of events.

Sliwa would have to leave the state to open up the slot, and then Republican borough leaders — city council members and the only Republican borough president, Staten Island’s Vito Fossella — would need to anoint Adams...

The 71-year-old ran as the Republican nominee in 2021 and won 27.8% of the vote. That wasn’t enough to win a plurality let alone a majority, but if his supporters were to rally behind Adams in November, it could be enough to keep the mayor in Gracie Mansion.

Of course, it all hinges on President Trump’s willingness to extend an olive branch to Sliwa (and by extension New York City) and Sliwa’s willingness to take it.

“Curtis has to make a decision of conscience. How much does he love his city as opposed to running for office?” longtime Democratic strategist Hank Sheinkopf, who is vehemently against Mamdani, told me.

Sliwa voted for Trump in 2024, but has previously called him “a screwball and a crackpot.” He also briefly left the Republican party in 2020 and has stated he didn’t vote for Trump in that election.

The move is to have Curtis Sliwa endorse Mayor Adams.

A Republican is not going to win NYC.

Adams may be ‘less democrat’ than far left democrats- but he is still a democrat who has let his state go to hell-

Republicans should try to do better than settling for Adams. Talk about a loser mentality. Let Adamas and Mamdani split the Dem vote and get a solid, law and order candidate to run as a Republican (one who can win). Get Bloomberg to switch back to GOP and run again if that’s what it takes. Some have suggested Eric Trump. There’s got to be a better option than getting Adams to switch to Republican.

Mayor Adams running as a Republican is the literal definition of RINO. It only works because a real Republican can never win The City , but an alternative to a muzzie commie could. This is why the two party system is a failure. A Republican win and the moderate dems got kicked out. So a moderate or even a liberal Democrat in the Republican slot is too the right of alluuuakkbar commie.

Bloomberg and Trump would never win in today's NYC.
The only way to keep this Muslim communist out of office is if Cuomo and Sliwa drop out. Cuomo needs to not endorse anyone and Sliwa needs to endorse Adams.

When Sliwa ran against Adams 4 years ago he received 28.2% of the vote. Combine that with the Blacks who will vote for Adams and the the 36% who voted for Cuomo, Adams may stand a chance.

It’s well documented: Eric Adams was a registered Republican for much of his adult life before taking a left turn.

Rudy was republican enough.

If this muzzie nut job wins why should we care? Are we scared his ideas will catch on?
The wack jobs like Jasmine Crockett can only help us.

Eh, it may be better to have a true nutbag be in charge of NYC to show the country the result.

As usual the New York Republican State Committee is a day late and a dollar short. They are always MIA. They might as well not even exist.

Adams should go GOP and choose Sliwa as a running mate to ward off the threat.

Sliwa is interesting on radio, but he’s also a wacko, and he’s not really a Republican. Even in the previous election Adams was effectively the Republican - running against a real progressive. He’s a lot better than the Mamdani.

I’d like to see the mayors of LA and Chicago, along with this dope, appear on Jeopardy! - that would be epic...

Eric Adams was a registered Republican in the 1990s.

You can’t even get a real Republican in red states. What do you expect in NYC? Giuliani wasn’t even close to conservative. But Adams is light years better than Mamdani.
