Trump budget calls for more than $1T in defense spending, massive cuts to education, foreign aid and environment

President Trump unveiled his 2026 budget outline Friday, proposing cuts totaling $163 billion to education, housing, medical research, foreign aid funding, energy and environmental protection — while seeking to boost defense spending to more than $1 trillion.

The $163 billion cut in non-defense discretionary spending is a 22.6% reduction from current levels,

...

The proposed cuts to government funding are in line with Trump’s greater mission to cut bureaucracy via the Department of Government Efficiency — and DOGE

...

The defense budget calls for the elimination of “woke” and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs; a down-payment on a “Golden Dome for America” missile defense system; and additional funds for shipbuilding, US space exploration, and next-generation F-47 fighter jets as well as a 3.8% pay bump for US troops.

...

The administration is also calling for $175 billion as part of the reconciliation bill “to, at long last, finally secure our border,” of which the Department of Homeland Security would get $43.8 billion in the next fiscal year to carry out mass deportations and to help finish a border wall,

...

The Transportation Department would get a more than $2.9 billion boost to hire more air traffic controllers and build out the nation’s port, freight and shipping infrastructure.

Congress will still have to come up with their own budget plan, which could take months to hammer out.

I personally think the Defense Department could be cut or at the very least frozen at current spending levels.

I’m sure if the DOGE team was unleashed on the Defense Department, they could find 200 billion in waste fraud and abuse that could be funneled into legitimate defense expenditures that would allow all current weapons programs to be funded without throwing more money at the situation.

No one wants to do it but we need to cut the defense budget.

sure we don’t need to increase the amount, but at least Defense is one of the things Fed govt should be doing and having money for, unlike education, health care etc that Constitutionally it should not.

Defense must be cut. Get serious about reducing waste. Also cut bases and deployments overseas.

Regrettably you are correct, defense spending must be cut, so great is the threat of our unbalanced budget.

But unless we put DOGE down the memory hole, there are additional billions and billions ripe for the cutting in the war Department.

Since we learned our lesson for about the 10th time in World War II, we have substituted dollars for soldiers' lives but now, thanks to Democrat and Rino profligacy, we must face the prospect substituting soldiers lives for funding. When that reality takes hold and we realize that it might not be somebody else's child who is the substitute, we might become a lot less belligerent.

I’d be glad to give the DOD a trillion dollars if 1,000,000 fed employees were cut loose, that would leave us with 2,000,000 workers and am pretty sure we could get by.

Sigh - as usual, one idiot (not you - those who responded so far) says something stupid and everyone else jumps on the inner tube.....they want to cut defense w/o actually knowing our status or what the enemies are capable of.... but they read stuff in the “news”...

One trillion!

Of course. If we haven't blown enough money on wasteful spending, of course, the solution is to spend even more money that we don't have. Smart. Really, smart.

Now, what could go wrong -- only an economic disaster worse than we have now.

I'm sure it's gonna work out real well -- NOT.

The ignorant childish “Race” has to stop. All it is doing is making MIC contractors rich. They have nothing we do not have. And we all have enough to blow up the world five times over. Redundancy without need is money wasted.

If the money is spent on actual defense I see no problem with it at all. We are currently at war with Russia whether we like it or not and we are in a trade war with China. The Middle East is at war. If there was ever a time to bolster our defense, it’s now. War is coming.

“our Nation has spent more on net interest payments than both national defense and Medicare so far in Fiscal Year 2024.”

I wonder what will happen to our economy if all those countries owning our debt decide to cash it in?

Excellent proposals. The feral government should have no role in education and should not spend one cent of tax money on foreign aid.

I’m sorry but can we cut out all the DEI stuff?

we need to do more research into weapons of mass killing, not necessary destruction. since china, who steals our techs being the only way to keep up, only have population advantage. we need a way to kill 10000’s chinese at once. poisoning their soy sauce will not work.
